That is a lot of fun to do. It's easy to learn, and I doubt you would be falling on your face, or at all really if you're comfortable riding. Start small and work your way up. You can get this to the point of your board being perpendicular to the water, but again you need a gradual progression.
Start by staying inside the wake and just pulling on the handle while you toss your weight back to get a feel for riding on your tail.
Throw your weight harder and more aggressively until you feel comfortable with the motion and start to feel like you can't go any higher with the nose.
Then try doing a small ollie and skimming your tail on the water for a second before you flatten out.
Start to throw your weight back in the same motion as before, and increase your ollie gradually.
Repeat these steps after making a cut outside the wake and go from there.
Ultimately, the idea is to make a hard cut out and perform a short poppy ollie while pulling back on the rope to bring the nose of your board up in the air. Then straighten your back leg hard, pushing your tail into the water and maintain balance by leaning against the pull of the boat (on edge in a sense while skimming the water on your tail) and then bending your back knee to hold it as long as you can before it slows your board down where you have to flatten out. You can even do this while the boat is turning around at the end of a line for longer/faster slides. _________________
