Something very strange happened to my friend while wakeboarding today... this is the email we sent LF. We weren't sure if we should email LF or BBB about it.

Quote:
During my last session I was landing a simple HS W2W jump. As soon as I hit the water the front binding (left foot) twisted inward, and the heel of the binding lifted off the board significantly. The base plate on the binding (2008 OT Watsons) was screwed tightly to the board and is not what caused the binding to twist. After removing the base plate I noticed that the four screws, intended to secure the base plate to the binding, had broken completely in half. The end of each screw is still in the threads on the bottom of the binding. They each broke off flush with the boot so I am unable to twist them out. Furthermore, the larger screw on the heel of the boot was ripped out of the binding, threading included. This means the only screw that prevented my binding from coming off the board completely was the large one at the toe end of the board.

What is strange about this is that I landed on my board as I would on any normal W2W jump. I didn't catch an edge or hit the water weird. The second I landed it just happened and the heal came up and twisted. I have no idea if these screws broke over time or all at once. It never felt like my binding was loose and the screws securing the plate to the board were tight. I purchased the bindings brand new at the beginning of this season from boardersbestbuy.com. I have only been out three times with them (6-7 sessions). Will this be covered by the warranty? If it was only the screws that were seared in half I could find a way to get them out, but because the threading on the heel screw is ripped out completely I feel like the boot is unreparable. I've owned nothing but Liquid Force out of the several bindings I've owned over the past several years. I've dealt with them before and know for a fact I installed the bindings correctly. The screws in the base plate and heel were put in tightly and I'm not sure they would have come loose in only 6-7 sessions.

I have attached pictures of the binding to help show what I am talking about. I've also included a picture of the right binding where I noticed that one out of the four base plate screws was seared in half in the same manner as the other four on the left binding.

What do you guys think? Will they replace them? I thought it was incredibly unusual and unlikely that the screws would break in that manner. I have no idea how it happened. I was watching and he didn't land very hard at all. Hes a big guy though so who knows. He screwed his knee up pretty bad when it happened. He can still walk on it with a limp but is in quite a bit of pain. He thinks he'll be fine within a few days... we'll see.

Will they cover it?

I'd bet my life on it, but why waste time emailing, call them up and get it taken care of in like 15 minutes.

I would guess that the screws on the bottom were a bit loose from riding or perhaps they werent tightened completely (doubtful). Bindings almost always break when something get's loose and its hard to check screws that are under your bindings Wink

Anyways, I'm sure they'll cover em.

Sounds like they're going to cover it. They asked for shipping and some other info and then said they'll give me an address and a reference number to ship it to for them to be repaired or replaced. Think they'll send 09's if they do replace them?

shaggyboarder, yeah I couldn't believe it when I took the bindings off and saw what had happened. I think they probably broke one at a time over time though, considering we found a broken one on the right binding as well.

When some stiching on my Hyperlites came loose and a strap let loose my local shop told me to wait until the end of the season if I could and guranteed me that HL would replace my broken 08s with 09s, so I am sure at this point in time you will get some 09s

Kyle f is right, when it comes to the major brands, they'll give you the newest model to replace any defects. They want your return business, and will make you happy once again. Wouldn't hurt to tell them that your friend was hurt pretty bad because of it too. They might be a little more generous. I try to check all my equipment, but especially my bindings periodically throughout the season, and don't leave them attached to the board all the time. At the end of the season, go over your gear with a fine toothed comb and make sure there aren't any developing problems that might come back to bite you. Use those warranties.
