Posted: Jun 27, 2009 1:25 pm Post subject: My new $50 board... |
|
|
I bought this board (142) used because they were only asking $50 for it. I don't know much about boards but the edges are good and it doesn't look like it has been through too much. It doesn't have any fins on it so I need to get some. Are they universal or brand specific? It also only has one hole at each end. I am assuming those are for the fins but all the fins I find are 2 hole design. I can't even find this brand on the internet. Maybe it is so old that it doesn't exist anymore.
Another question I have is about the bottom. The top is nice and smooth. The bottom has a sort of rough texture to it. Is it supposed to be like that? Not just real rough but noticeable. It is not shiny either. Kind of a matte finish. Anyways just let me know a little information on my board because I can't find any.

OLD SKOOL! Looks to still be a fine board, so I don't think it'll be any issue especially if you are a relatively beginner rider (which, no offense intended, based upon your questions seems to be the case). That's a pretty sweet lookin board though, especially for $50. I would definitely get some new bindings for it though if that's in your budget. I'm pretty sure that any bindings that are still the 8" hole pattern will fit it. The only reason I specify the 8" is because lately bindings have been going 6". So just ask about the width of the baseplates at a local shop if you can go into one, and make sure they fit on the board while you are in there. For fins I don't know if you'll find many fins in such an old style, but maybe you can, I'll do a quick look to see if there's anywhere, but maybe a shop would be able to help with that too. I'd just ride it finless anyway, it'll be slippery, but will be forgiving and teach great technique as well.
Congrats on the steezy purchase and go out and shred it!

savage3221,
The 6 inch bindings still fit old boards. My 09 transits fit on my 07 3ds just fine.

eric-holmes, That thing is awesome. Ride that sucker till it snaps. I agree some newer bindings might be more comfortable but heck it was 50 bucks, screw the fins and bindings - ride it!

| Thanks guys, It sounds like I made a good decision. I know its a bit big for me being that I am only 5'9" and about 125 lbs. I will look into getting something like a 135 once the funds are there.

Bigger boards are great for learning on anyway. Added stability. I was about 140 and learned on a 141 and I didn't think anything of it. Rode the board for years before I wanted anything different. Enjoy

I have that EXACT board in my garage with those exact bindings too. Mine came with fins though, I bought it for $114 two years ago and the board is a 1998 board, so yes a bit old school. It was a great board to learn on. Like you I am smaller, 5'7 and 130 pounds when I first used it. It definitely helped me to learn, and the fins that come with it are massive, like two inches XD It helps with stability and practice. Just to warn you though, they are very difficult bindings to get in and out of, it might take a while to get used to putting your foot in...
Also, when you eventually start to want doing tricks and jumps etc you will need a new board. Especially for someone lighter and smaller, this board is not very ideal for tricks, but is a great board to learn on. It is a very heavy board and bulky which will help you learn, but at a point you will want another board for what you might want to do (if you plan to do tricks). I bought my new board this year (third year of wakeboarding) and there is a huge difference. If you want I can take pics of mine for you to see some things, the only difference is mine has fins and is red/blue.

You could just ask me since I have the exact board
the way you attach the fins for these is just one bolt, the other two holes are there because the fins have small nubs that fit in

Hey man if you go to any local board shop and bring in the board they will have a box of old fins for sure. Those are just the older generation of fins. Get some smaller ones like 1.5" or 2".

| I wouldn't mind selling it but I would like to trade it for a little newer/smaller board. So if someone would be interested just pm me or something. I can't imagine how you would ship these things.

| This is true, I could have waited and spent more money. But in the wait period, I would have had no board. Just like I would like to have a Mastercraft boat. Or, I could buy a cheaper one now and enjoy it.

eric-holmes,
Just enjoy what you have. When the time comes you can always upgrade, and if you post that you're ready to, the guys here will point you in the right direction so you get a nice board for a good price.
As for the boat thing, just remember if everyone had their own boat no one would get to ride. Learn to be a good boat driver and just help with friends boats. It'll go a long way.

I have 2000 hydroslide matrix that has fins like that, now that my new HL came in I probably will never ride it again, if you want I could see what the spacing on the alignment pegs is. That board rides like crap without the fins, almost uncontrollable, great for surface slides though.
My first 50$ board was a really ols school stick shaped like a surfboard with sandals bolted to it lol. Yook it out this last weekend for the hell of it, just to see how hard it was to get out of the water. I'll tell you what, it was like plowing a tank getting up, no wonder I had such a hard time that first year.
