Noob here! I have read a lot of posts about learning how to effectively wakeboard and "The Book" seems to be a common thread in the answers.
It looks like there are two versions of it available now,one with 9 discs and one with 5! What is the difference and is the extra money worth spending? Does anybody want to sell their copy? I have Paypal! Very Happy
Thanks Todd

Yes, just researched it for myself. The 5-disc is wakeboarding only. The 3-disc is wakeskate only, and the 8-disc is both. Hope that helps. They also have a mobile version of all of them.

I own the book dvd set and must say it is the best purchase I have made. It can be a little boring at times like most instructionals get but it has so much amazing information. I would definitely go ahead and purchase it. Instead of trying to teach people that want to get up myself (which I do ok at but doesn't always work) I tell them to watch The Book and they always say how much it helped them understand getting up.

Unless you are planning to go from beginner wakeboarder to professional rider by the end of the season, you don't need all 5 of them right now. If you have gotten up behind a boat, then you only need Vol. 2 for quite awhile. If that is the case, Vol. 1 is a waste, IMHO.

#'s 3-5 are also a waste of money THIS season unless you are already riding aggressively. If you are already able to go w2w, then you really don't need #2 either. If you don't care about saving money, get them all. If you do care, then evaluate where you are and decide whether you should start with Vol. 1 or Vol. 2.

This is only my second FULL season of riding, and I'm just now getting to where Vol. 3 has stuff in it that I'm capable of trying.

My advice, if you're new to "The Book", is to look at the first Vol. for sure. I've just recently bought it, and i figured i'd start with Vol. 2 because i'm comfortable with edging ect.. but when I decided to look back at Vol. 1 I found some errors in my technique. Fixing these errors has really made me more comfortable in the water, and I'm definatly progressing faster now that i have the basics down correctly.

I picked up the book today from "The Liquid Playground" in San Jose. Austin hooked me up since I'm new to the sport.

I watched most of disc 1, which was pretty basic stuff I already knew. Picked up a few tips.

Got about halfway through disc 2 and fell asleep. It was a little dry, but mostly I was tired. I am really interested in trying out the edging drills. I wish they'd note how fast the boat is going and weights, etc while showing you whats going on. They must have been going 8-15mph. Hard to tell, but there was NO wake at all and the rope didn't look very long either. Maybe it was just so they could film easier, dunno.

At any rate, going slower seems like the key to learning and familiarizing oneself with new techniques.

I really found the Book to be helpful, but as others have said it is a little boring at times. Detention 2012 is a really good instructional video also and not boring like the Book. It also has some nice underwater shots that really get the point across, for example the underwater video of the deep water start is perfectly clear on form and technique. Practice, Practice, Practice.

You won't be disappointed. I have the 5 disc now, and I pick about three sections to watch and work on every time I go out. When I get back, I watch them again and evaluate whether I was doing it correctly or not. The first disc may be a waste of time for some riders, but I think everyone should watch it at least once because IMP most would have something to learn from it, and as far as their progression goes, you'll definitely want to make sure you can do everything they talk about in Vol. 1 at will.

I think most people should watch disc 1 just to learn boat etiquette .

edittman1, I wish I could pull up to people on the lake and show them that section. Or, just ask them to leave.

On our lake we get a lot of intertubers who like to go around in circles in all of the coves... which makes my line way rough at times. I wish I could do the same.

Christobull, yeah, we usually are on larger lakes here in CA, so we don't really follow the "one side of the lake" approach. But it makes sense on smaller lakes. Plus lakes around here have somewhat strict rules on the circulation.

I wouldn't want to be on the left shore of a counterclockwise lake going against traffic. That'd just suck, since they'd be blasting you with waves too.

On that topic, I wonder how far a wave has to travel from a 20mph boat setup for wakeboarding, before it begins to dissipate........ quarter mile or so?

edittman1, Big Bear for some reason doesn't enforce the clockwise rule, so my line is constantly getting thrashed. But I understand them not enforcing it to a certain extent i guess... Big Bear isn't really a watersports lake.

Interesting. As far as boating goes around here, as I'm sure it's the same in most areas, you are supposed to travel up the lake on the east bank and down the lake on the west. It's not a law, but you're supposed to. As far as watersports, I guess Oklahoma is just pretty slack.

On the topic of wakes dissipating, I think the depth of the water plays a part in that as well. In general, it seems that deeper lakes are rougher in the center than more shallow lakes under similar conditions. On a large open area of the lake, I don't think that rule of staying to one side becomes as important, whereas in a smaller channel, cove or tributary it's either that or take turns. But, even if one boat is circling by itself, the conditions just get worse and worse.

Yeah in cali It's just counter-clockwise. Our lake is long at the northern and southern ends so the west/east thing doesn't work out... but if you really think about it, it's pretty much the same as counte-clockwise
