a regular backroll is where you essentially use the wake to do the trick, you're kinda doing a reverse cartwheel motion, but rotating around the rope.
with a mexican backroll, it's essentially like doing a frot flip on a trampoline. It's a roll that's hucked instead of floated like a normal backroll. The thing here, is the way the roll is initiated and stuff, I swear the mexican looks like a HS front roll, but by the tragedies of wakeboarding terminology, the name has been mexican backroll, and although there's a good explanation for this, I think in the end, it's just to confuse folks like you and me Mad
yup, I have regular backrolls super consistent, budabingbudaboom. As for the mexican roll, less consistent. Some people feel the mexican is less stylish. The majority of these people can not do one. When learning your first invert, I'd recommend the HS Backroll, because it's super-easy...

So a mexican backroll is just the special name for a hs frontroll?

No - I think it's when you run rail over rail instead of tip over tail. Sometimes people do it to try to force or "huck" the rotation with their body if they're not getting it off the wake.

(FYI - The first woman rider to successfully land rolls was speeding up her rotation like a gymnast by pulling her knees up to their chest. She was Mexican so people called her style of roll "Mexican". Obviously, guys did this a lot in the early days too, sometimes letting go of the rope with one hand and tucking or whatever. I prefer the term "hucking a back roll".)
