Alright, who here longboards (skate, not surf)? I've been really into it for a while. Anyone else? I'll try to get a pic of my quiver and toss it up here.
We need more GNAR!

I have a sector nine that I bomb on the hills around the city when I'm feeling brave.

savage3221, we use to do a late night downtown longboard sesh. Hit up all the parking garages around Guadalupe and 30th area. I have a sector 9 as well and love it. I ride it almost everyday when I walk my dog.

Surf One longboard here. They are done by Powell Perralta.
I ride the classic. Mainly just cruising.
NMB, lock up that deck good. Just in case some kid stole it and hurt himself!

Sector 9 43" Bamboo Pintail. Need to get out on it more especially since they repaved my neighborhood.

Yeah, that's definitely an awesome place. There's a whole crew that does Monday night sessions all around downtown, many of them work at Wahoo's on 6th. I get down there with friends too, love it.
I've become just as obsessed with longboards as I have wakeboarding. Some of these are now completed rather than truckless and a few are getting sold. Although I do have another one being built... god, it never stops.

I just got one of the a few months ago. Also got a Sector 9 420. I use the bamboo board with my kite. Ride through the parking lots. Also, when I am lazy I let our dogs pull us around
My nephew has a Dervish whic is pretty fun as well.

Been thinking about getting a longboard lately... anyone have a suggestion on a good beginners setup? I used to skate some (about 10 years ago) but never longboarded before.

Dude I love that fregan place. I want to open one in the midwest. I'm thinking state street in Madison and one in Milwaukee. It would be a fregan cash cow.

edrex, I can help you out. What kind of board would you like? And how much cash you willing to put into it? You can get a really nice setup for like $170-200, but there are definitely some cheaper setups out there.

Ive wanted to get into longboarding, but I tried my friend's and found that the whole length thing was throwing me off. Let me explain, I was given a legit 70s banana board from a neighbor and have learned to love riding hills on it. Its tiny, agile and smooth, but not ridiculously fast. I hopped on the longboard and every time I tried to turn, Id fall off the side because it wouldnt turn fast enough. I guess I just gotta get used to it, but I still love my banana board.

savage3221, under $200 would be ok. I don't really know enough about them to know what I would need. Something good for beginners, doesn't have to be super fast cause I have a job that depends on me not killing myself.
Seems like something with a kicktail would be preferrable.

savage3221, thanks, that Never Summer looks pretty sick. I have to do some more reading up on it all before I decide.
Forgot to mention before, but I would mostly be doing flat ground cruising... is there anything special I should be looking for?

edrex, based upon what you would like to be doing, there are some specific dimensions you can look for. Like, if you would like to board walk/dance, which is like cross stepping and body varials and such as the stuff at 1:30 in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fhmiPOF8Ak), it's nice to have a little bit of foot space, so a slightly larger board. Something like 38" and up usually work.
If you want to pump, which is when you carve back and forth and can accelerate because of it, you'll see it in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i70IczG2ejE (Yes, I know it looks pretty funny, but I just picked the first video youtube pulled up). For something like that, it's good to have a little shorted of a board ~38" or less. But you can find a board that you can do a little bit of both on.
Trucks and wheels are important too, but I've gotta run to class, I can help you a little more on everything after that's over if you have any more questions.

I need a longboard too. Mostly city riding though when I'm in WI it is a tad hilly. No tricks, just transportation. Instead of walking 30 minutes I'd like to ride. I don't mind kicking a lot and don't need tons of speed since surely there will be suburban idiots, bums and cabs crossing my path. Pumping sounds like what I'd be doing. I'd imagine I need some stable wheels for all the rocks and crap I'll be riding over, not exactly on paved paths here...
Based on what I've read here, 38" or less but don't know anything about deck shapes. I definitely don't need to spend anything over $150.
muck, got any old boards for sale?

If that's the one you wrecked yourself on with Ollie, no thanks.
Do you remember I told you I met George Powell?

It's just some stupid regular board I bought.
I don't remember you telling me about Powell. I would like to hear about it.

I've been riding longboards for years now... I've owned mainly Sector 9's (Cloud 9 & Downhill) with Randall trucks, right now I have a Lief Longboard. I haven't set it up yet, I'm kind of reluctant too, it's a piece of art.

What is that middle deck?
Who wants to explain the Chicago style kingpin vs. the reverse kingpin thing?
Anyone been on that loaded dervish yet?

Middle deck is an old wood ski that was flipped over and converted into a longboard - super fun to ride since it has quite a bit of bounce to it.

wood waterski, it has an upward arch to it that goes from tip to tail, so when you step onto it the board itself goes flat, but gives it a lot of spring going from edge to edge

Alright I'm getting tired of walking and really want a damn longboard. Can someone link me a board that suits my desires as posted above? I don't have time to physically shop around, if it has a deck and wheels that spin it'll probably work.
George Powell and Chris Iverson came to one of my classes to learn about aluminum metallurgy.

Ok say as stated in the GET thread I rode a never summer last weekend. Not sure the exact board but it had the tiny ends with exposed trucks and a TON of flex. It was slightly slow, easy to control, but I caught the wobbles at 30 and seriously almost threw up my excess adrenaline.
So I have found some pretty awesome long rolling hills on my hick TN back roads. Before the NS I had ridden a stiff board that seriously would do 30 on a 1% grade. I think I want a board that will coast some flats but also not kill me when I do bomb the bigger hills.
Not too concerned with a ton of quick carving ability off the bat because I can always swap trucks once I get better. So who has suggestions for a good balance of stability for 30+ but also fun on the slow long slopes?

I don't know that trucks exist that won't wobble at that speed. If that's what you're really looking for you can get extra stiff bushings, but ultimately they're gonna wobble too at some point. The key is to bleed some speed by carving and stay below that critical speed.
My SD surfer friends seem really stoked about Carveboards. They do turn insanely tight even moving at a good clip.

That was awesome
So really I just need to improve my technique and avoid getting scared of my carve to the point of just straightlining it? Because that's how it happened, I was carving this slope just lovin it and when it hit a point where it started to steepen up for about 100ft I just straightened out and rocketed down it.
So do I need to quit looking for a board that boasts being stable at high speeds and just find a really quick carving board so I can cut more speed off?
