I haven't bought a new one since 1998. Now that I have a kickass TV I figure I better get a good DVD player to maximize the effect.
I'm not sure I want a BlueRay player. It seems to me more like a fad that won't last long.
Other than HD DVD, is there anything I need to look for? |

I let the Cabana Boy decide on the DVD player but he's getting me stuff that can do Blu ray as well.
PS3 for Blu ray best deal & quality. I know there was a topic a while back in the Non forums. Porn industry decided to go Blu ray and that's why DVDs became cheaper. _________________
8824, dude - I suck. You were right.
. |

haugy, Blu Ray is not a fad. Although it will eventually be replaced by streaming video.
Boss just bought this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882676136
Pretty cool that it has Netflix and Pandora built in. More and more devices are going this way, there are even just Netflix receivers so you can stream video.
Samsung has a less expensive model - BD-P1600 that also has the Netflix and Pandora capability but loses WiFi and the storage capacity. _________________

chavez, very cool. But damn, $379???? Is that normal? Surely not. I hope. I mean damn, I wasn't expecting to drop that much.
Blue-Ray's can play normal DVDs right? I don't want to get a BlueRay and not be able to play my older DVDs. I don't think they have SpaceBalls, and Team America World Police on BlueRay.
Dragonlady8, don't think the wife wants me to get another gaming console. |

haugy, yes they play regular DVDs too. Most even upconvert them to mimic real HD.
Anyhow, there are standalone BluRay/DVD players for under 200. Name brands even.
As cool as that Samsung model is, at that 379 price point I'd likely just get a PS3 anyhow. But my boss and PS3 would not compute. _________________

Best Buy had a Memorial Day weekend sale and we bought a Sony Bravia TV along with a Sony BluRay player. The BR was $99 when bought with the TV. The usual price for the Sony was $249 and I have heard that it is the best player, outside of the PS3.
BR does play DVDs and at least the ones I have look so much better with the new set up. We got some BR movies for Christmas and it is amazing how good the quality is, especially using HDMI cables. Only thing left for me to do is change the hookups so that the audio is routed to our surround sound system. _________________

chavez, I swear, I'm not backwoods. I just don't plop in front of the TV enough to really care about learning this stuff. |
