| We were riding today, my wife was driving and i was behind the boat. My buddy points behind me signaling me to look, when I did there was a boat with about 7 people in it about 50ft. behind me in our wake. What is the proper reaction for a situation like this? I let go of the rope when I saw them because it scared the hell out of me and they missed me by about 25 ft.

I'm thinking letting go was a bad idea. At least if you're holding onto the rope you've got some maneuverability where if you let go you're a sitting duck.
FWIW I got pulled right in front of a very large yacht/very small cruise ship boat one time in a competition. The driver literally crossed the other boats path perpendicularly and we were probably 100ft or so in front of it. If I would have fallen for any reason it would have been a really bad day.

Whatever I would have done it would NOT have been to let go. I know you didn't think it out, and just did it, but you should break that habit right away. Something like that that can kill you.
I'd be incredibly pissed if I was the rider OR driver and would wave my arm and yell. When they pass on one side or the other I would cut to that side if I was riding and continue haranguing them about their stupidity in disgust up close.

If it were me, here would be my reaction: a prompt middle finger, spoken expletives, motions signaling for them to put their mouths around my member, and then drop trou and wait until they got tired of riding behind my hairy ass.

I would do the exact same thing. It gets even better when they stare back at you like wtf are you talking about?
Last summer we were riding on the river and a boat came right up behind our rider. Dad got as close to the shore as we could(leaving 3/4 of the river for them to pass us. What did they do? They stayed right behind our rider, until dad decided to move to the middle of the river. Then they went speeding past us. It would have been a perfect time to fly the bird and yell expletives if the boat wouldn't have been a family with a few little kids.

wait for them to pass and bust a 900 directly into their boat. after they comprehend the shear awesomness of that i would procede to fornicate with every legal aged female on the boat irregardless of age or appeal. after i would thank the driver for putting me in dangers way and giving me the adrenalin rush only grisly Adams got after wrestling with 5 kodiaks and hop back out of the boat as my driver flew by tossing me the handle as he went by. a tecnique i like to call L-2 (named after the shaun murray wakeboard game for ps2)
realistically i would signal like a madman untill they stopped.

Wait till they tie up for the night and sugar the tank F'ing retards like that don't deserve to be on the water.
Ok Ok, ideas of assault and vandalism aside, I would have got the ID number off the side of the boat and ratted em out to whatever enforcement is around there, somehow I have a feeling they were drinking a bit to much to pull some BS like that.

This is a favorite tactic of mine whenever I see someone do something really ignorant. Yelling, signaling, waving....all ineffective-they have no idea that THEY are the ones in error. Instead, I get the make/model/color and I tell the first water patrol officer I come across that they pulled up to us earlier and asked us if we wanted to buy some weed from them because they needed money for more beer.
The water patrol in MO absolutely LOVES to bust people for weed possession, so everybody wins.

pet575, That's messed up. Why wouldn't you just tell the patrol they were driving like morons and must be drunk since no one in their right mind drives like that?

JeffreyCH, they don't get all that excited about that. Plus, they'll hassle them a lot more, hold them over for awhile while they "are more thorough", search the boat, and basically ruin their day on the water once you mention weed. For whatever reason, they have a hard-on for pot around MO lakes and rivers. My brother has been popped twice for possession, once on each type of body of water.
I figure it is the price they should pay for being idiots and endangering everyone else. If something turns up in the search, that is their problem.
jctwake, I go to Pomme de Terre.

pet575, Ahhhh I get it now. Geez I'm spoiled we have like no enforcement out on the lakes here, just game wardens that hang on the shore. I guess I see the 2 old dudes in the little coast guard boat a couple times a year, they just smile and wave most of the time.

If I were the driver I'd pick up the rider and chase them down and signal them to pull over. If they didn't I would follow until they did while calling the cops (they have to pull the boat out somewhere).
If they did stop I'd give them a stern talking to, but try to keep the swearing to a minimum at best. My dad had a coast guard looking shirt that said "Security" on it and the one day somebody did that he happened to be wearing it.
He did what i said above and pulled them over and basically said you're endangering peoples lives dont ever do it again. One thing's for sure I'd do my best to get them to pull over and talk to them. A lot of times people are that stupid and don't realize they are endangering people.
If they're really a jerk to you, follow them to the landing, get the plates, and call the cops. It's a bunch of screwing around but if everyone did it, there would be less a-holes on the lake.
My $.02

I like pet575's idea and also like Wakeboarder3780's idea. I'd say you definitely should keep your cool and try to educate them either directly or by having the authorities take care of it. Wakeboarder3780 is right that there are lots of people out there that don't realize things they are doing are unsafe.

I had a sorta similar situation happen a few weeks ago... but it was way more scary.
I was out wakeboarding on my local lake and some jackass in an AIRPLANE did a flyby about 30 feet behind me. I freaked out and let go, and we got a snapshot of the plane as it was doing a second flyby, you can just barely see it in this picture... but you can get an idea about how close to the water he was.

Back home I was riding one morning and we turned the corner in the canyon and at the same time a fire helicopter swooped down and dropped a hose or whatever it is to scoop up water right in front of our boat. I dropped the handle and my buddy driving the boat swerved and had to stop. I think it scared us more than anything. We probably would have been fine to ride past and get out of the way but you never know.
