I changed the oil for the first time on my new moomba and had to suck the oil through the dipstick even though my manual said I could use the quick drain ( but that's another story ). I was able to get 3+ quarts out plus what was in the oil filter so when I refilled it took exactly 4 quarts. Since the manual says the engine holds 5.5 quarts I must have left 1.5 quarts of dirty oil behind. Is that normal? It seems like a lot to me.

Seems like a lot to me also. I usually put 5 quarts back into the boat. What's wrong with the quick drain?

I don't know what's up with the quick drain. I fought with it all morning and couldn't get a single drop of oil out. I followed the hose up to where it disappeared under the oil pan and there wasn't a valve or a kink or anything. I called my dealer and the guy I talked to ddin't seem to know anything and told me they just use the dipstick tube.

just changed my oil for the first time w/one of these pumps. It sucks. It took about 45 minutes to drain my oil w/it. It worked great for about 15 minutes then, I had to constantly pump the rest of the time.

Funny thing is, I got one of those things because I'm always a slob at oil changes. I got every thing back together and what not, fire up the engine, all off a suppen oil is spraying everywhere. I forgot to take the o-ring off from the old filter. Needless to say I ended up w/oil all in my bilge and all over my driveway. I'm just going to get one of those hose things next.

I only pulled about 3.5 quarts out of mine too and it holds five.

Craig, we're going to have two boats at Rockport tomorrow all day. Mine and Dave's Super Air Nautique. You ought to meet us there, we're going in the early afternoon and hanging out all day. A few of us are camping too.

yea, I sent you an email inviting you to join me at east canyon and then Dave called telling me you were all going up there. Since I plan on leaving east canyon by noon I might bring back my boat and buddies and hop on the motorcycle to meet up with you at rockport. I'll have to use Dave's board but he's ok with it and it's always nice to try out other setups. happy boarding

that does sound like you left a bunch of oil in there. Maybe try warming up engine first, and then draining oil. Presumably oil will be easier to suck out then b/c thinner. I just drain it out cold.

You gotta sort out your easy drain hose, they are so handy and do a good job of recovering all the oil.

Partyb makes an excellent point. I ran my boat for 5 minutes on the fake-a-lake before draining the oil.

Thanks norcal, I kind of made that up. I guess I'll try that myself next time.

Try taking the oil cap off.I have a Pela pump(supposed to work with 15 pumps). It took forever. Then I took the oil cap off and it came out really fast.didn't take very long at all.

I hate changing oil in my boat. You have to practically stand on your head to get the filter out. And the pump I had was crap. I just bought a new one, its that Tempo Oil Boy Pump. Anyone have any experiences with this pump?

Definately run your boat for a while to heat the oil up. Then use the quick drain. Let it drain as long as you can (I leave mine over nt.) just to make sure I get it all out! Also, as someone else mentioned, be sure to take the cap off of the fill hole.

Good Luck!

It is really hard for me to get the quick drain through the hole in the back of the boat. Any suggestions on how to make it easier?

I have changed the oil without warming it up and it took about 3 hrs to get all 5 quarts out. Warm it up and the oil will come out much easier. I have a moomba and it has a oil draining hose that I put throught the drain plug hole and loosen a nut on the end of it. GEt a fakealake.

If you don't want to run the engine open up the hose and let it drain overnight.
