So Im going to build a editing pc.

Currently Im using a Macbook Black. Works great. But for render intensive jobs and new HD footage its alot harder to work with.

Im going to keep the macbook for traveling updating event videos and internet.

What Im looking to build is a editing computer. Its going to be a pc because of cost. Going to be running Adobe CS4 with all the fixings.

Im thinking currently Duo Core Processor
at least 4g ram
High Dollar Video Card
Lots of Cooling
Decent Mother Board
On board storage will be small 400gig
External Terabyte harddrives
Either going to run 2 22 inch monitors or 1 24 depends on space

Im going to be getting into After effects to start doing more work with motion graphics for more commercial work. I want fast renders and I want the computer to be able to handle a ton of work.

is 4g ram going to be enough?

any recommendations of mother boards and video cards.

Im going to be building it all piece by piece

look into setting up a raid array if you're going to be doing a lot of editing.

I take it you're going to be using avid dv for editing now?

scott_fx, defiantly not planning on using avid. I have no experience with avid and from what everyone says its a very intensive complex system to work with.

I was planning on editing with premiere pro and doing post in after effects.

Im planning on buying a RED scarlet when they are released fall 09

I am looking to get more into post production graphics and effects

avid isn't really that crazy, you can't jump into it like you would premiere but they just don't compare and when you get into it and the workflow will be much faster then in premiere... increasing your profits. i haven't touched premiere in a while but last time i used it i wanted to throw my computer out the window.

after effects is fun and you can get a lot of great things from it but also check out combustion and maybe jump into maya or max (with v-ray) for more intense effects work.

sorry... i'll let you get back to your original topic. I'm not sure what you'd need for that system, but if you were thinking about going avid-dv then i can ask a few of my buddies for basic specs that you'd need
