Can some of you throw out a few suggestions on places to consider for trailer wheels and tires? My tires are cracking some and the chrome rims have clear coat on them that is deteriorated. I'd like to get something nice, but pretty basic for a good price. Ideally I'd like to be $100 or less per wheel/tire combo.

You might try this place http://shop.easternmarine.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=catalog.catalog&categoryID=159 I've been looking around for new trailer rims and tires myself. I was in Menards the other day, and noticed they carry rims and tires in stock, 14's ran about 70 bucks for white 5 spoke rims with the tires.

Goodyear Marathon's have always worked well for me. If you trailer quite a bit you may want to think about getting a spare.

Okie Boarder, Tractor Supply, and Northern Tool. They will have basic rims and tires for what you need. Get cheap rims and decent tires.

So, when talking tires, what are the preferences out there and why?

Radials or trailer tires?

I'll put in a plug for goodyear trailer tires.

A few years ago I had an trailer axle snap at 55 mph. The ~8 inches of axle and attached wheel were held to the trailer only by the u-bolts. This pushed the tire, running at 55 mph, directly into the trailer fender causing flames to shoot from the fender. It was hot enough to melt the traction pad on top of the fender.

The 3 year old tire withstood intense heat, flame and friction and allowed me to merge through traffic for about .25 mile and get off the road. Not sure if other tires could do that or not, but I've been a fan ever since.
