I don't think we've hit bottom.
I'm not buying anything right now. Will probably wait at least 6 months to see how everything goes. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

I am waiting as well.
I can't believe GE is at 12 and change.
I heard 4500 is not too far off. That would scare me! _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

8824, 4500 would be insanity. And no, it is actually pretty far off. That would be nearly 45% below current levels, and would represent some insane forward P/E ratios and insane price to book value numbers (some negative!). Insane may not be a strong enough word.
So, you have to balance the doomsdayers with the pie in the sky'ers. Find some middle ground and you will probably find the correct answers.
And as a sidenote, even one of the beariest (and highly publicized) bears out there, Noriel Roubini, has his retirement accounts invested primarily in equities. Why? Because historically, that is the best performing asset class over the long haul. So even though he is a doomsdayer short term, he is looking at a much longer time horizon. _________________

chavez, That's good to hear, I am heavily invested in equities as well.
I guess I will keep my advisor for anther year. He moved me into equities in Sept.
You have access to all the economic forecasts, you have not heard 4500 before? _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

8824, I have heard it all. And I take it all with a grain of salt.
This year, my buys have been on the big drops. I am also on a systematic investment plan, which amounts to a DCA (dollar cost averaging) program. I will continue to manually buy if levels drop again, and plan on keeping the DCA going perpetually.
We are young. I will take the 30+ year numbers from almost any point in history happily. Especially from a total return perspective. _________________

chavez, you know that the majority of my info comes from CNBC, I don't make the news just report it!
I was pretty shocked late last year when a few peeps around here thought we hit bottom before the xmas season. You had to know those numbers were going to be brutal. _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

8824, the market is forward looking. If a person is selling because those numbers disappointed, that person is an idiot. We knew those numbers were going to be sucktastic.
We also know that the bank numbers are going to be sucktastic. Turn the thing over and shake the suckers out. Until all the suckers are going, the bottom will not be in. Maybe this already happened - I don't know. If I did I'd be smoking a stogie with Warren Buffet on my G5. _________________

There are a ton of ways to hedge your money that do not necessarily involve gold. In fact, I would not recommend any one thing. We would likely recommend a strategy using multiple things (which actually may include gold at some level).
Mr. Locke may be right, he may be wrong. Short-term predictions tend to be about as good as the TP in the mens room: thin on substance so you have to be careful not to get the poo on your hands.
Better off buying Ont's magic beans. _________________

| Just got my 401K statement for the last quarter of 2008. It was down 21% for the quarter and the amount in it is now less than the amount I have contributed. |

As long as you are continuing to invest (and not retiring this year) you're golden. Keep investing. You can do 2-3 years worth of investing this year. I'm another DCA believer. My IRA/MF balances lick balls right now, but I'm buying 2-3 times the shares with each investment payment that I was before. A down market is great for working joes. Unfortunately it can also be disasterous for retirees living off their investments.
Turn that frown upside down. _________________
