hey everyone i need to do a 4-6 minute pre-written, powerful persuasive speech on a topic of my choice, but i cannot for the life of me think of something original to do, so i'll ask you guys and claim it as mine.

anyone got any ideas, some things that have been done are capital punishment (for/against) apartheid and closing speeches for murder cases and the like.

anyone got any decent ideas?????????

I wrote my persuasive speech on why you should snowboard instead of ski. It was one of the best speeches in the class. I made a movie as a visual aid.

War on terror, Technology and society, Australian support of US policy, treatment of aboriginals... I dunno, my brain isn't working too well right now.

I friggin hate coming up with ideas on things for school... I can never think of something good, so I pick something totally crappy. Then I'll be doing the assignment or whatever last minute and then a great idea pops into my head (but I don't have enough time to make it good)... I hate school.. Thank God it's almost done!

nick e[V]ans,

You should do your speech on persuading people to wear protective equipment when doing extreme activities.

Like when I freestyle walk or Sope Shoe I weal my full pads. Laughing

franknbeans, I actually did that speech in a college communications class......I think it dealt specifically with bud, though.....I got an A.....The jist of it was if we sold it to the public, taxed the hell out of it, and put the money in a national defense fund, we would be alot better off.....Try that Nick. I would stay away from the drug issues. In most situations you'll end up saying that legalization will help. If your teacher is 60 years old and doesn't like you I don't think making yourself look pro-drug is a good thing.

A speech is always more effective if there is a personal connection - particularly if you're trying to persuade.

Some easy ones:

drinking and driving
wearing seatbelts
wearing a motorcycle helmet
not smoking
wearing a life vest
street racing

If you have examples from your personal life then it's much more powerful. If not, then examples from your friends, school or town.

Nick,
What about something to do with the suburbanisation of the Gold Coast/sunshine Coast region. Make it local. Perhaps you could do something on the decreased opportunities for local musicians, especially in Brisbane, due to continuous complaints from residents who CHOOSE to live near live venues. That should be pretty easy to research, plus it is something completely different. First I would check out if your teacher lives near an ex or current live music venue.

See how that goes.
PS I am a teacher

hey everyone, thanks again for the help choosin the topic. i've got my final draft written up and i thought i'd give yous all a look to see what you thought. it is a bit long and i dont care if no one reads it.

umm bit of info to help it make sense. i'm a year 12 (final year) student at a private co-ed school in brissie (cannon hill anglican college).

[Context: I will be delivering a speech to a whole school assembly about how I killed one of my good friends by drink driving. I will be giving the speech as myself, a year 12 student at CHAC and I’ve had my license for 3 months.]

Good morning Mr. Wain, Staff and peers.

As many of you are well aware, I have been asked to speak to you this morning about a tragic incident that took place only a fortnight ago. This incident has shocked, hurt, and damaged so many innocent lives. This incident, the death of a loved one, is an event that occurs quite frequently, and many of us may have been unfortunate enough to experience it. What is so different about this incident, is the circumstances under which, the tragic death occurred. The most dangerous and deadly of these circumstances is the fact that alcohol was mixed with driving.

Let me walk you through the events leading up to the incident. It was a Saturday night. Our 1st XV Rugby team had played earlier in the day and we had a convincing win. Many of the rugby team had gone out to a party that night to celebrate our victory. The party mainly consisted of CHAC seniors. As at most parties attended by people our age, there was alcohol being consumed to varying degrees. As I had driven to the party and had to drive home to complete school work the next day, I had chosen to only drink a small amount.

About two hours after I had arrived at the party I was talking to Chris Munro or Noddy as many of us knew him. The subject of conversation soon turned to cars, and since my dad had just bought a new car which I had driven to the party, we decided to go have a look at it. We were sitting in the car and noddy asked me to take him for a quick ride. I was keen on the idea, but since I had already had three beers I wasn’t so sure. Noddy said he only wanted to go around the block, and I thought that 3 beers wouldn’t harm my driving. We were driving through the back streets near the party, adhering to the speed limit. Approaching an intersection, I made what was to be, a fatal mistake. I failed to see a stop sign before the intersection and passed through it travelling at 50km/h. Neither myself, nor the car crossing through the intersection had a chance to stop. The car coming through the intersection, hit the left hand side of our car at 60km/h. The impact threw our car into a power pole on the right hand corner of the intersection and the car was wrapped around the power pole from just behind the drivers door.

The next few moments are still a bit blurry, but something I have not forgotten, is the violent sound of metal, crunching metal, and the ear shattering noise of glass, steel and timber breaking as we hit the power pole. Something else I will never forget, is the noise that noddy made, just before everything went silent. This noise lasted for little more than a minute, but every second of it seemed like an eternity. The noise is something I would not wish upon my worst enemy. It was the noise of one of my best mates, dieing. Noddy was sitting no more 30cm away from me, he was dieing, and there was not a thing I could do. I was pinned in my seat from what had been part of the roof. I was killing my best friend.

My stupidity, my ignorance, my ego, and my unforgivable actions had just killed my best friend. I couldn’t move, I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, I wanted to cry, I wanted to move, but there was nothing.

Noddy was pronounced dead, at the scene of the accident. I was cut out of the car after 3 hours of being trapped. Trapped in the seat, where I had killed my best friend. Trapped only centimetres away from where I had heard my best friend gasp for his last breaths. Once I had been cut from the car, I saw Noddy’s parents and his brother Troy. They looked at me, they were distraught, I could see their pain, I could feel their pain and I was crying their tears. Yet I couldn’t even muster enough courage to walk over and speak to them, not even a sorry. It was Gut wrenching.

Not seeing the stop sign was an easy mistake for a new driver. But this mistake was made even easier, by the fact that I had been consuming alcohol. It is for this reason that new drivers are only permitted on the road with a BAC of 0.00. New drivers must not consume alcohol and drive. I have broken the law and will be punished, as an adult, for manslaughter. But even more punishing than this, is the fact that I will be living the rest of my life, knowing that I killed my best friend.

It has already started, I haven’t had a decent sleep in 2 weeks, even sitting in a car scares the hell out of me. If I do manage to fall asleep, I wake up screaming or crying, from the memories constantly replaying in my head, the noises, the visions, the last flashes of light before impact, over and over again. I will be forced to live with the shame, of this community, the shame of my parents and family, the shame of knowing I killed my best friend, and I will be living some of this life, in jail.

Before I finish, I would like to formally apologise to all of the people sitting in front of me, especially Chris’s family and his brother Troy. I know my apologies will not fix anything, they won’t bring back Noddy, but it doesn’t change the fact that I am and always will be sorry.

The message I am trying to give you people is clear. I have ended a life, I have ruined many more, I have made some, including my own, seem not worth living I have left hundreds of people mourning the death of my good friend noddy. Alcohol is not something young people should be experimenting with, Especially when driving a vehicle is involved. Don’t make the same mistakes I have. Please, people of Cannon Hill Do Not, under any circumstances, Drink and Drive.
