I'm only really posting this cause some guy is wake boarding through the flooded areas. Pretty good pics though.

That's pretty cool looking. The two wakeboarders looked like they were having fun. I liked this particular comment...

Incredible photo gallery! What strikes me is the joy on these peoples faces, the people at the food counter with waders on, the men drinking wine, the woman waiting for a boat on her cellphone. Then I think of the thousands of idiots in New Orleans during Katrina using it as an excuse to steal and loot the businesses in the very community they live in. The people not being prepared who stayed by owning waders in a high probability flood area. I also find it hard to believe that the people of Venice will be looking for government /tax payer funded assistance for the rest of their life because of this "tragedy".

Anyhow this is going to sound retarded and Haugy will probably make fun of me, but does this happen often (often meaning every ten years or something along those lines)? I mean the people seem so comfortable and carefree, it seems like there would be some panic but everyone just gets out their waders and continues on with their day.

ilubronix, from the paragraph above the pictures:

Venetian floods are fairly routine, several occurring every year, and residents usually take it all in stride.

You do realize that most European countries (actually most rich western democracies.) have higher taxes and spend a lot more on social welfare right?

I bet that wakeboarder is getting paid out a good amount for that shot. Cool Red Bull will be pleased. Laughing

That video is pretty cool! Looks like he was having fun.

Funny, I must have missed this comment...

So I guess you're trying to say that the reason you see so many "Happy" italians in the pictures is because they have so great social welfare. I'm assuming that's what you mean by that comment.

I couldn't disagree more and I'll give you two examples from the U.S. to illustrate...

New Orleans - Hurricane

Per capita, there are a high number of people receiving the benefit of the social programs. When the hurricane came through, they looted, got pissed off at the government for not helping them enough, and whined about not knowing what to do to take care of themselves.

Iowa - Floods

Per capita, there are a low number of people receiving the benefit of the social programs. Most people in the areas hit were not "rich", either. Yet, they didn't loot, they didn't get pissed at the government, and they got out of there and/ or took care of themselves.

By your logic, the people in New Orleans should have been happily sipping wine by a flooded street and the people of Iowa should have been the ones upset.

My belief is that people that understand the situation around them (ie: living in an area proned to flood) and that accept their situation for what it is, will be happy and roll with the punches. A person that feels they are entitled to more and someone is supposed to give it to them, will never be happy and always play victim, blaming someone else for their situation.

This is the very reason I believe social programs are detrimental to a society in the long run. People start to depend on them so much they cannot survive on their own and the expect that handout all the time.

If you want to test this theory further, suppose the government stopped handing out any money to anybody for any kind of social program. Apply this hypothetical to different groups of people in this country and think about who would survive and who would not.
