Mac is on the way, any tips/tricks?

Grr....

Buying an iMac today. Wife REALLY wants it, and our old PC is nearing it's eternal dirt-nap, so it's time.

BUT I REALLY WANTED A NEW 52" LCD. Oh well.



Looking at the basic 20" iMac, 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, 250g drive, wireless keyboard & mouse.


I think she needs Office for Mac. Anything else (software) a teacher might find useful?

Hmm... although I am talking to myself in here....

I wonder if I should just get iWork instead of Office?

I can use any MS Office apps I "have" to use through Citrix or even BootCamp. So can she for that matter.

chavez, I would stick with MS office, she should be able to get some sort of school discount, if your BIL (or whoever works at Apple) isn't already hooking you guys up. She should get an educational discount on MS office anyways though.


Also head over to Newegg and pick yourself up 4gb of ram (it will be less than $100.)

You missed the black friday Apple on line special for Office - media edition reg $499 I got it for 169.
It's now going @250.

They also have a special for the Imac friday too..... and I well well needed to up grade my desktop and picked up the 24" 3.06ghz

Dragonlady8, because I am immediate family, I got taken care of. I did see that price on Office Media Edition. Great deal for sure.

We stuck with the 20". It's an upgrade in screen size for us as it is. Now we are digging through our receipts for the Viewsonic monitor I bought last year (Costco). Hey, $200 in my pocket would be much nicer than a monitor I don't have much use for.

I have used the OS enough to know how to use it, but not enough to know the good programs to get or shortcuts to use. Hook me up.

Think simple. The interface was made to be as simple as possible. I get on a mac and the only thing i can do is open safari and itunes. So i guess i know too much and i think about what i'm doing too much and then cant do a simple task. But i hear once you get used to it they are awesome. Grats on the new purchase

-Quicksilver will probably be the first program that you're gonna want to install if you're into shortcuts. It allows you to set quick keys so you can open any program or folder by pressing one or two buttons. It can do all sorts of other stuff like move files between folders, but that's stuff that I'd prefer to do on my own, honestly.
-VLC player and Flip4Mac are both good media players to have, too.
-Disk Inventory X is nice to have if your hard drive is getting full because it'll create a visual representation of how much space every file on your HD is taking up.

Dragonlady8, that policy is limited to certain items. Monitors are not on the list of limited items.

Download bittorrent and then just get office through torrentz.com for free and since it's a mac you don't have to worry about getting a virus, plus you just saved a stuff load of money. Then while you're at it get photoshop and final cut, and then say "Hey since we saved so much money by those programs I got free, I think I deserve that 52 inch."
