Hey whats up? I'm thinking about starting to try raleys, and like everyone else, I want to do this the least painful way possible. I had a thought about slowing the boat right down to about as slow as it can go (without it sinking back down into the water), and trying them like that.I'm guessing the speed would be around 16 mph or so. That's just a guess. Anyways, would this work? Or is there going to be a line tension issue? I'm also thinking about trying it on a wakeskate first. _________________ Go Big. Go Bigger. here i go once again...
the way i learned was simple. i was always hesitant on the raleys (10 years of riding to be exact) due to the falls, but this is the method that i learned it.
step 1, hit it up on the wakeskate and get the motion of the raley down...edge through the wake, release, superman that ho, then PUSH the handle down to the water, do not pull it to your chest. as you push the handle down, bend your knees to your chest. everyone says to look at the tower, but i never did because i always like to spot my landing. it's personal preference, whichever works for you best i guess.
step 2, pull the rope in to about 65-70 feet and slow the boat down to where, at that rope length, a raley-cut into the wake will take you wake to wake. once comfortable with that, superman that ho with a board strapped to ya. same motion, hard edge, release, bam, push handle down and pull knees to chest and spot landing. once you get this down, speed the boat up just below regular length rope riding speed (to where you're comfortable at the shorter rope) and take it to the flats. after this, drop, go back up to normal boat speed, regular rope length, and have a little fun. i learned to do this trick perfectly in one set doing it this way. |

I can't say I'd reccomend slowing the boat down for learnin raleys, I would think that the softer/washier wake would be a lot worse.
Raleys are a trick that rely REALLY heavily on your edge that you bring in to the wake. What's always worked for me was to carry a super hard cut and think about literally locking out your knees and leaning really hard against the rope. Once at the wake make sure and push through the wake but think about letting the tension out of your back and it will rocket you out into raley position. If you do it right, it should over-extend your body and it basically snaps back underneath you.
Staring into the boat helps to keep you from stargazing and getting way out of position. Raleys are a little more impressive when they're clean as opposed to stargazed.
Personally, I would think the wakeskating technique would be an unnecessary step, and no matter what you do you're gonna crash and take a beating as there is no chance of riding away from it. |

That was one of the best vids I've seen in a while. After a while you just start cheering for the poor guy for all the falls he takes, but on the 4th day it's stomp city.
I mean a Raley is a damn cool trick. It's probably one of the most "impressive" tricks to non wakeboarders. _________________ 2010 Watson Hybrid

I learned raleys at o'town watersports with glen fletcher. i was there for a 3 day weekend, and he had me do 4 wakeskate raleys before i could strap into a board (about 7-8 sets). then on my last set, he had me do 2 more wakeskate raleys, and strap in the board immediately, do 2 warmup wake jumps, then i just went for it and landed it first try. the most important thing to think about is keeping your weight evenly distributed on both feet so that you don't stargaze, and when you get to the wake, stay on your edge and (this next part is KEY) dip your but and shoulders. that dip pulls the rope, and you get slingshotted into a raley, then from there, you should be comfortable with bringing it back down from all of the wakeskate raleys. and we didn't slow the boat down considerably, we shortened the rope, and slowed down so that the wake was pristine. _________________ www.munsonski.com
