|
|
All,
I have been fighting with my pylon to get as tight as possible. It is very stiff, but it still has some movement. I have read on the net that all extended pylons will flex a little. So maybe it is as good as it gets.
Yesterday I had a revelation. Not sure why I never thought of this before. In the pict I attached you can see my strap goes around the nose of the boat through the bow clip. This is fine, but I have been getting the strap so tight that it has indented the rub rail. What about connecting the strap directly to the lift eye that is right up in the front of the boat just behind the front lights.
In the pict you can see the silver clamp in the pylon strap. I basically attached that directly to the lift eye in the front of the boat. This eliminated the need for the entire second strap going around the bow.
We rode like this yesterday and it seemed fine. Can anyone think of a reason NOT to do this? That lift eye is supposed to support the boat when it is hoisted out of the water correct? So it should be plenty strong enough to support the weight of the pylon strap?
We are going out today. So if anyone has a strong feeling NOT to do this please let me know ASAP. The boat is a 1990 Supra Comp TS6M
Thanks

It might break the clip off. That's a lot of force on it. I think many manufactures of pylons have thought of that and they tell you to put the strap where they tell you for a reason. It's called research and development.

the lift eye is designed to be lifted straight up, not have force from an angle.

| I used the lifting eye on my prostar without any problem. Mind you, that is now a thing of the past as my Monster Tower is due to arrive today (that's if the UPS guy get's his finger out his.ass and bothers to deliver it...)

Anyone else use the lift eye? If so what results?
Thanks for the feedback.
I agree the manufacturer does R+D and makes a recommendation. But they certainly cannot guarentee or test with all of the lift eyes on all kinds of boats. So it is much easier for them to make a recommendation that will work for all boats. To me it doesn't mean something else won't work.

Are you sure that's actually a lift eye? If you talked to the boat manufacturer and they confirmed that it is indeed a lift eye that is intended to carry the weight of the boat then you're probably fine. Unless you're sure though, I'd be a little cautious. Can you get up under the deck to see how well the eye is attached and reinforced? That might give you a better idea.

I am sure it is the lift eye. It it attached to the floor under the deck.
I am getting a lot of mixed reviews on this. So I am real interested in hearing who else has used this for their pylon strap.

| I wouldn't recommend it. My buddy did the same thing on his prostar. He broke the eye off and destroyed the front of the boat. Those eyes are only designed to lift up, not at a 45 degs. I'll ask him to see if he has any pics and post them.

| OK - That's enough. Back to putting it around the bow. Thanks for the responses!
