It all depends if anything happens to the refineries here. They're basically all here so it depends if they get hurt, and which ones do.

I am at my family ranch. The eye of the hurricane went over my house. However, we only lost a few shingles an old fence and power. Luckly we were far enough away from the coast. Everyone I know is OK but my Grandmother inlaw got a lot of water in her house, she is at elevation 3' in Texas City. THanks for your thoughts. Take Care.

Oh man love this line from an article.

South of Galveston, authorities said 67-year-old Ray Wilkinson was the only resident who didn't evacuate from Surfside Beach, population 800. He was drunk and waving when authorities reached him on Saturday morning.

"He kinda drank his way through the night," Mayor Larry Davison said.

I just got my power back. I lost a bunch of shingles off my garage and about 5 trees and countless limbs. Also, I just got word that my boat made it without a scratch, but there are a bunch of sunken boats at Bridge Harbor Yacht Club @ Surfside (where I dock). A 48 Ocean and a 53 Viking among those that went down. I'll post pics tomorrow, I'm sure it will be sickening...

Well fellow Texans, I hope you guys are all ok.

We are getting the aftermath of this storm and it is Bubb Rubbing stuff up around here.

We have not seen rain like this since 87 and they just issued another warning for 5-8 more inches.

I hope all you guys are safe and have not received too much damage. Just freaks me out to see the carnage here and you guys are taking it directly.

To make matters worse, I have been on the wagon for one month tomorrow. I could really use a vodka on the rocks right now. Mad

Glad to hear many of you weathered it without too much trouble. We were watching all the footage yesterday and there are some areas that got hit pretty hard, along with lots of flooding. We got just the edges of it as a TD when it got here to OK. We got a fair amount of rain from about 2pm yesterday until around midnight, but nothing major. Everything it just very well saturdated now.

Yesterday was the most rain in a 24hr period since they have been keeping records in Chicago. And it is still raining today.

Again, while it doesn't compare to Houston and Texas as a whole, some people have over 6ft of water in their homes and are being forced to evacuate (mandatory). Things are pretty bad here.

I just hope everyone is safe in Texas. This board has somewhat changed my perception of Texans! Laughing

nmballa, Worst flooding ever in the history of this city.

Look a the radar, Ike is coming right over us. It's really bad. People along the North branch of the Chicago River are forced to evacuate (mandatory).

The worst part, the rivers will not crest until maybe Tuesday, and it is still raining hard.

Oh snap getting out the surf board. I got a text earlier that the lake was going off. Sucks about Chicago but I'm going surfing. Wonder what time it's gonna hit us. Nothing here yet and I'm only an hour north of you.

I am drinking nothing but bottled water.

Damnit... How far you think I need to head to be safe. Thinking of heading to Sheyboygan. They have a great break up there.

nmballa, Have access to penicillin?

I know the locks up at Wilmette which is a northern suburb has been opened, not sure what they did north of there. Some areas received even more rain than Chicago. I heard one suburb got 8 inches yesterday. And it's still raining.

If you see a turd float by, just get out!

nmballa, Just wanted to give you fair warning, looks like they will have to open all the locks, flood gates again if they haven't already.

FYI, used to go into the lake frequently. I have stopped over the last 4 years. Risk is not outweighing the reward. Not sure what it is like around you, but up near Zion (very close to the stae line), asbestos was washing up on the beach over the past few years.

8824, it's pretty safe once you get outside the break walls. Fell in the river about 4 years back and within 2 hours was down with a fever and a severe case of strep throat. Once you get up to Sheyboygan its pretty clean. Man they really need to start cleaning up this lake.

Yes Hooters in Galveston took a major hit.
I lived towards the west end of that island awhile back. I'm sure the apartment complex that was my home for 2 yrs sustained some serious damage.
The buildings weren't that sturdy and weatherproof back then and I'm positive they didn't make any changes after I left.

Officials: Parts of Galveston Causeway buckled

By Sara Foley
The Daily News
Published September 14, 2008

GALVESTON — Officials who asked not to be named said parts of the causeway have buckled. State officials said earlier southbound lanes of the Galveston Causeway won’t be reopened until engineers can inspect it and see if it is structurally sound.

Large yachts, sailboats and other vessels crashed into the Causeway during the storm, possibly damaging the Causeway’s supporting beams and bulkheads. Specific details about how extensive the damage is and what was damaged wasn’t available.

Debris piled between 6 and 8 feet high littered the southbound lanes, covering the roadway with fragments of wood and trash.

There’s no official word on when the southbound lanes of the bridge will reopen. Vehicles are allowed on the northbound lanes of the Causeway, but once someone leaves the island, it’s not clear when they’ll be allowed back on.

Officials estimated the island suffered $18 billion in damage, Galveston Police Capt. Henry Porretto said.

in the interest of full disclosure (not that i think any of you really care, but still...), i'm totally stealing these from posters on longhorn sites.

Quote:
The Balinese Room is no more.

Ike took it out.

Quote:
The Maceos took over "Chop Suey," a small restaurant at the intersection of 21st Street and Seawall Boulevard, and in 1929 they opened "Maceo's Grotto" at that location. It was one of many entertainment venues that popped up along the Galveston Seawall around that time (along with bathhouses and dance clubs, some of which were illegal casinos). In 1932, the "Grotto" was remodeled into a Chinese restaurant called "Sui Jen" (pronounced Swee Rin), and a 200 foot pier stretching out over the Gulf was added to the building.

The oriental sounding name was changed to the more exotic sounding Balinese Room in 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and the decor was modified accordingly. The pier was also expanded to 600 feet. The Balinese Room's private back room was equipped with the most modern gaming equipment, and the Maceos' advertisements invited high rollers to "Come Down and Play on Galveston Island."[3]

The club's illegal gambling made it a hub of mob activity. It was well-known that the casino, at the far end of the pier, was operating in violation of the law. But the Maceos had many allies in the local government and on the police force, so charges were never filed. The sheriff of Galveston County at the time, when called before the Texas Legislature to testify about why the club remained open, replied that he wasn’t a member of the private club so he couldn’t get in.

In 1956, Will Wilson was elected as Texas' attorney general after campaigning to "close down Galveston" and its illegal casinos using the Texas Rangers. The Rangers set up shop in a hotel near the club, and raided the casino often. But their efforts were thwarted by the length of the pier — by the time they ran down to the tail end of the long, narrow club, tables, cards and chips had disappeared into secret wall and floor pockets. The band often would strike up the song "The Eyes of Texas" upon their arrival.

The Rangers did eventually shut the club down, but not through heavy-handed tactics — they simply sat in the casino all day, every day. Customers, intimidated by the Rangers' presence, began to stop coming. As a result, business was so bad that the club eventually closed its doors on May 30, 1957.[4]

In 1961, Hurricane Carla damaged the structure. Many of the piers that supported the structure had been washed away, and over following years, the building continued to decay.

Quote:
After sitting vacant for 20 years, the Balinese Room and its pier eventually became the property of the State of Texas. A local attorney, Scott Arnold, took out a 60-year lease on the pier, and in 2001, reopened the Balinese Room for business. In addition to the Balinese Room itself, which was used for live music, parties, and weekend public dining, the pier had a salon, retail shops and a massage therapy room with a glass floor.

On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike barreled into the Galveston sea wall in the early morning. The storm surge, waves and wind of Hurricane Ike were more than the pier could handle, and the Balinese Room was destroyed. Only plywood, rubble, metal and the club's famed red door were left after the hurricane passed through.[5]

Galveston has a lot of history and some of it is now gone.

EDIT: FYI, the Maceo's and Fertitta families intermarried several generations ago. If you don't know the Fertitta name, you do know their restaurants.

Among them:
Landry's
Willie G's
Babin's
The Aquarium (downtown Houston)
Cadillac Bar
Rainforest Cafe
Saltgrass Steakhouse
Vic and Anthony's Steakhouse

The family also owns the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and the San Luis Hotel in Galveston (among other holdings.)

Some of it's gone? A lot is gone and/or severely damaged.

I wonder how Gaido's did during the storm.

Cool story...At least I thought so...

I bolted out of town to Granbury and my parents, who live about 3 miles away, decided to stay. So, now none of us have power and they asked me to pick up a generator up here an bring it back when I come home. So, I figured there would be plenty of generators this far north of Houston...WRONG!!! Everywhere is sold out. So, I go on Craigslist, find a generator that a person bought from Lowe's that morning for 1,299 and was now selling for 2,000. Well, I needed a generator so I told him I would buy it. After about 30 minutes, I decided I really could help support someone capitalizing off of others misfortunes. So, I told him that and that I was going to find one elsewhere. Got off the phone with him and he called back about 10 minutes later and told me I was right and that he returned it to lowes and if I wanted it, I could call them real quick and buy it from them for 1,299. I called t Lowes and bought it. Then I called him back and he thanked me for calling him out and making him realize what he was doing was wrong. I thought that was pretty cool of him and restored my faith in humanity just a bit.

Some pics from BHYC @ Surfside. The tower of my boat was rubbing on the roof, so another foot of tide would have sank it. Other boats didn't fare as well...
