I fell this afternoon wakeboarding, a normal fall. Possibly a face plant, and the board came back and whacked me in the forehead. I had to go to the emergency room. I got six stitches. Is this common? I wouldn't think there would be any way to prevent this, but I'm not sure.

Glad you're ok. I've heard of it happening, but I don't think its REAL common. Question

I had a friend get hit in the head with the board, he just got a big bruise on his head though...he's really short, are you? I think that actually happened to him twice, might be more likely if you're pretty short...cause that hasnt come close to happening to me (6' tall).

One thing I learned years ago skiing, once you let go of the rope, get in th habit of covering your face with both forearms. My motto, once you learn to crash, the rest comes easy Laughing

that happened to my brother last summer. the problem he had was he was pretty much letting his body go limp when he would fall. so just stay strong when you fall and your board shouldnt come anywhere near your face. i have been riding for 11 years and never had anything like this happen.

My cousin did the same thing (actually we're not sure if it was the board, or the handle that hit her..). Amazing how much (and how fast) blood can come out of your head and you're still conscious. After this incident my dad bought helmets for my family and if we don't wear them, we don't ride.

I've never had anything like this happen to me, and I've been boarding for 4 years. What you're probably doing, is going completely limp when you hit the water. That is a BAD idea. Doing that is how people get broken bones, head/face split open, and other injuries. What you want to do is hold your position when you fall.

BTW, My cousin is a pretty bad wakeboarder anyways.. The way this happened is she was loading the line with so much tension it would pop her out of the water (in the flats... theres no way she could jump the wake) and she'd faceplant every time. We kept telling her not to do that until she learned to jump wake consistently, but obviously she didn't listen. She got around 40-50 stitches (cant remember the exact number) in her forehead because of that. Pics below..

ouch! that looks pretty bad. I have see people hit the back of the head but not a front shot like that. Surfer is right about the scorpion. I have heard it called that a few times in the past.

Wow, that pic looks a lot worse than mine. I'll have to try to get my pics on here again. My cut only turned out to be only 3/4 to 1/2 inch long going horizontal in the middle of my forehead. Hers looks a lot worse. No more wakeboarding for me up here though for this season. Its way too cold now. However, my parents have a townhome in Florida by Fort Myers, so now my brother and I have to find a place to go when we go down there in January.

I had a girl I was teaching get hit in the forehead and she was only up a few seconds. We even had it on tape and played it in slow-mo and couldn't tell how the board hit her in the front of the head. No stitches or anything, just a real nice bump and a headache

WOW that's gnarly, i got hit with the nose of the board under my chin and had a few stitches, i thought i had broken my jaw at the time though, chipped part of my tooth as well. it was probably the tip of the nose of the board that hit you
