...Four years to the day of my last Wakeboarding accident, I decide to face my fears and get back in the water. Took a week off work to go back to where I got hurt, the Columbia River and get back on the horse. I went to the same place, used the same board, took a half dozen shots of Petron, grabbed my nuts and finally went.

I went the first day and every day afterwards until I got sick. Never did feel good. Never did get over the nerves. Never did feel comfortable. Each time I went I got the cold sweats and was nervous as a whore in church. BUT I did it and I did it again.

Now I find out from my friends about the "Columbia River Nose" mystery illness! WTF! Been to the doctor three times in a week with the worst headache, sore throat, ear ache, coughing, nose--the whole nine. I've had shots of antibiotics and now I'm on steroids to try and prevent it from going into pneumonia. Nothing is working.

Sometimes I think being sick is worse than being hurt. This may be a sign it's time to put the board on the rack for good.

Quote:
COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE - In the growing Columbia River windsurfing community, it's known as 'river nose,' a mysterious illness that people have been reporting for a while now.

The symptoms that people complain of are a clogged up nose, extreme congestion, fever and fatigue, among other problems.

02lightning,

I'm the first to admit I am a Taco Bell Chalupa when it comes to being sick. You can cut my let open with a topical anesthesia and I have no problems. I get a sore throat and my world is ending.

joebananas,

Yes and the worst part is they "hope to have an answer by October!" Effing Canadians; they dump their poop into the Columbia untreated. My luck is MM traveled to BC and left me a present his science can't fix. Damn the luck!

I wonder if there is any truth in the belief that the reason you despise science so much is because you see it as unable to "cure" your son. That would explain a lot.

microman,

There probably is a lot more truth to that than I have ever admitted. Cannot begin to explain how frustrating it is for my scientific mind to accept that science cannot explain everything.

Working on a project to convert radioactive waste to glass and I look at the technology and I'm amazed. Then the next thought is if we can do this, why can't we do that. Never have been able to rationalize why it hasn't happened yet.

I've probably taken some of this frustration out on you and for that I'm sorry. It was never intentional, just convenient.

lcap if you're being sincere then I am impressed with your response. It's understandable to become frustrated or disillusioned at what you see as a lack of progress in certain sciences but you can't force these things. All it takes sometimes is one breakthrough and everything else starts to make sense.

microman,

I am completely sincere. Always thought nothing was impossible. If it's broke, we can fix it, we can fix anything. Always thought results were repeatable. Always was absolute in my thinking. Managing Diabetes has destroyed all that! Every complication you can have with Diabetes--he has. Pre-Dawn Phenomenon, Brittle Diabetes, etc.

It has caused me to question my faith in God and in Science. Not certain who I'm more upset with on any given day. For the pain God allows the innocent to suffer or for scientists not fixing it or the politicians who let the drug companies dictate what is and isn't cured. Some days I'm just mad at the world.

If it didn't bother him, I don't know why it would bother me, but that's WAY over the line, IMO.

Really? I think there would be a million ways to state that in an offensive way but MM chose his words carefully and concisely and made a very valid point. lcap got what he was saying and doesn't seem to be offended. I bet they even would have hugged if they were face to face.
Now, lets get this thread back on track with more AIDS humor. Shocked Laughing Laughing

lcap, just curious...how old is your son and which type of diabetes does he have? My bro has had diabetes since he was 10 years old and he knows quite a bit about managing it. I'd be more than happy to put ya in touch with him to see if he has ideas to help.

I could add some opinion on the science and God feelings you're dealing with, but that is probably best left alone.

Okie Boarder,

Type 1, diagnosed at 5. He's almost 12 now. On a new pump system that some days works better than the old pump or shots. The old insulin pump would get messed up if it was cold, jiggled a lot, got wet or just by the fickle finger of fate. Really wasn't good for his active lifestyle: MX racing, LAX, Snowboarding, Hiking, Football, Swim Team.

He also got the river sickness and for two days his blood sugars were over 600, normal is 80-110. Once the antibiotics kicked in he has been 22-85 with the pump suspended. The highs destroy his blood vessels; retina, heart, brain, extremities , the lows will just kill him.

It's a stealth mission--I'll be gone three days before you get in the water. Looking at houseboating trips now. I'll buy the beer and we can season the water together.

94' Houseboat!
Cool

Does blue/green algae live in your waters? They believe the cause of the illness may be related to blue/green algae. There have been blooms of it in the NW and they have to shut down the lakes. It can kill dogs and causes people to get very sick.

lcap, my bro is the same and has dealt with it for over 20 years now. I hear ya about the highs and lows...both are very bad. Sorry to hear you going through all the issues. There is still a lot to learn about diabetes and many times the progress can be hampered by lack of funding. Is the new pump working better? My bro had a few pump issues 4-5 years ago, but they got them worked out with getting him on a new pump. My bro also had issues trying to stay regulated when he was younger due to body changes and activity. He played soccer and basketball since he was little. If you ever have specific questions that my bro might be able to help with, let me know.

Okie Boarder

We just switched him to the new Omni Pump for insulin delivery. It has a self inserting canula and no tubes. Not having the tubes makes him feel a little more freedom. It also is water proof to 10' so he wears it wakeboarding and swimming. Also doesn't mind the bumps of MX racing. Hopefully, it will be unaffected by cold.

Only down side is the pod he wears for insulin delivery is fairly large and gets ripped off easy. That and when it jiggles, he can feel the canula jiggling inside his body.

Sounds like it may be working a bit better. I'm not sure exactly what pump my bro is on, but it definitely looks more simple and less rugged than that one. He had to take his off when he went to the lake with us last year, every time he got in the water.

There are lots of options out there these days compared to when my bro was first diagnosed. Pumps, both external and implanted, were just a concept in someone's mind back then. The advancements of today are a blessing and something to be thankful for! Very Happy It's hard not to get impatient and want more and faster development of even better technologies, but it is also good to put in perspective how far things have come in just 10-20 years.

lcap, I read an article about the Omni pump. Sounds really cool. It's amazing how far insulin pumps have come in such a short period of time (science wise). That is awesome your son can even wakeboard with it!!
