I currently own a 95 four winns 17ft. 4cyl (power does not seem to be an issue)
The question is if I upgrade to a bigger boat with a bigger engine is it safe to assume that boarding will be better? Will there be a better wake for sure? Looking at a 20 ft bow rider with a 5.0 engine.
Thanks oh and not even trying to afford a real wakeboard boat.

Thought about it is all. I was really wondering if it was worth trying or not. It would be cheaper though.
Sometimes you can go to great efforts to achieve something when really you should have just started over.

I totally agree with the "sometimes starting over" is better idea but If you are going for noticeable wake improvement I think you would need to start over with a wake specific boat. That way you only have to start over once anyway. Just my two cents though... 
I mention the weight idea because I finally had some extra people in my boat last week and am now sure that I will be adding some weight. The wake was noticeably larger.

Sounds good to me! I don't think the wife will go for it. I am an auto technician and everyday I scour the want adds for one with a bad engine. I think that is a pipe dream.
Anyway after you comment about weighting the boat I am going to give it a try. I am 50/50 on a new boat so this will help.........

To see if wieght will help just add a few people to the boat, I don't have a "wake" boat but a couple fat buddies seem to help. I also have my driver plane the trim up just a touch, these are things to try for free. Not sure about where you live, but I see a lot of good deals go by on craigslist, a lot more fixer upper type stuff on there then in the paper.

Try taking some friends or family, which usually are free to take to the lake  , and that way you can see what improvement you will get before you spend any money. Let us know how it goes. I hope it works out for you.

ruffdawg, the FW hulls actually make a pretty decent wake if you weigh them down and trim them up a little bit. I ride behind my 22' 2007 FW with 650 lbs in between the bow seats and the outdrive trimmed up about halfway from full down. It works out well-I have no complaints.

You can get a decent wake out of that four winns. Our old 18 footer had a pretty beastly wake. Plenty to get you through your first inverts and 360s. Granted an inboard will produce a better wake, but dont rush into one thinking that you need an inboard to ride. Get your basics down on the four winns and save your pennies for when you finally find that hull with the toasted motor.
