Got a Canon DC50 for Christmas. We (my wife and I) haven't used it much until we started shooting wakeboarding recently. Now that we've shot some boarding, we're having a pain in the butt time getting the videos onto our Mac laptop out of the Camera or off the DVD. Any ideas on how to get a VOB file onto a Mac? Since we can't put the mini DVDs in the laptop, we've been trying to pull the files off through the camera via USB. The Canon MyDVD (roxio) program that came on disk with the camera won't work for OS and even in a PC we still can't pull the files directly off the mini DVD.

Seems a bit ridiculous that Canon isn't providing everything we need out of the box with this camera. Anyone else encounter this? Anyone have any solutions?

You need a program like mac the ripper or any kind of dvd ripping software. Altough you would be better off selling the camera and getting a mini dv camera. The dvd cameras are not really meant to be used for any type of editing. More for the weekend dad that just wants to shoot some video of his kids and show it to the grand parents on their dvd player. Sorry for the bad news.

Dave W,
brinks is right in that it's not good for what your wanting to do, however you could download a program like "Handbrake", which is free and very easy to use. I've used it for a few of my DVD's, and it works well. But it does take a bit to rip a DVD onto your computer, (Generally about 2 hours)

We're not really all about doing extensive editing, it would just be nice to be able to quickly distribute the videos to the friends who are riding with us that weekend and/or be able to post them on the internet. Heck, even to just be able to burn them to standard DVDs to distribute.

2 hours to rip a mini DVD? Shocked Sad

AVOID

If you're stuck with it, you can always use Explorer to search the DVD, and pull the VOB file off of the disk. But I'd never, ever go this direction. The straight to DVD cameras are horrid. Mine was a gift. I stopped using it once my daughter was born because I didn't trust the camera. Now I am back to my digital-8 camera.
