wifi.. cell phones

I recall seeing some cell phones say they have wifi.. is this the same type of wifi like I have in my laptop? Can I go anywhere that has an available (un locked) signal and connect?

Are you able to do this with cell phones as well, and what do I need to look for that will tell me that its capable of this

yea
if a cell phone has wifi, it means it can connect to any wireless network assuming you have the rights to connect to it. Some of the newer blackberry's have it, along with the iphone.

The wifi is for internet connections / data, not calls..

Yes providers make you purchase data plans.

yeah I know, i was hoping that if i got a phone that has wifi I could not have to buy an internet plan and could jump on unlocked wireless connections.

you can if your phone supports tethering.
