I looked at it as I am in the market for a new phone. I played with the phone a lot this weekend. I need something to replace my Moto Q which died an early death.

It wants so badly to be an iPhone stand-in but misses the mark entirely. Just makes me realize how much it would benefit Apple and Verizon both if they'd come to terms on that whole ordeal. The Dare is not an option whatsoever for work/Outlook/Activesync users despite advertising some email support. The Flash support is barely there - to the point that I question why they claim it at all. The web browser is disappointing and way too proprietary. The touch screen us unresponsive yet the OS depends on it a lot. The touchscreen keyboard is ok - I still think that is a cruddy alternative to a slip out keyboard . There's a lot of weird fingernail drag&drop stuff. Just - generally - not in any way close to being something that can really compete with either side of the coin. Not hip enough to be an iphone yet not functional enough to be a pda. In short - a no-go.

My wife has the Dare, and I think it is a pretty cool phone for what she does... If you just want to make calls, text, etc. than it is great. I wouldn't use it for browsing, etc.

I tried to talk her into switching to ATT with me because I got the iPhone, but she wouldnt' leave Verizon. I wouldn't trade my iPhone for anything. But, if I was still with Verizon, I would rock the Dare.

Erik, I actually have the Moto Q now. I dotn use internet (yet) the main thing i really use my Q for now is the calendar, in future though I would like to be able to use the internet Im sure.

Im an Intern for VZ and I know they had mentioned that the Dare was not in responce to the Iphone 3G , and that its nto suppsoe to be a counter part to it. They also said they have 12 or so phones that will be coming out in 3rd and 4th quarter, but wouldnt say anymore.

Thanks for the comment though, definatly agree with churchy, I want the Iphone pretty badley it seems perfect buuuut vz network is uncomparable.

Erik, Laughing
What do you think of the new iPhone Erik? I have played with one very briefly but didn't get too far into features. I am really considering switching from Verizon to AT&T to get one.
One thing that I can't find too much info on is how well it handles POP3 email. I want good functional use of my email and I hate web-based email like yahoo/gmail/hotmail. I've read that it can do POP3, but I can't find any info on whether it has a good system for it or not.

edrex, it would be a no brainer if it were available on Verizon. I'd get one in a heartbeat if that were the case. And despite smwill214's borderline incoherent post (perhaps typed out on an LG Dare, causing the incoherent nature of the message) the Dare is, in fact, Verizon's current band-aid answer to the iPhone. This is from multiple sources at Verizon. First the Prada, now this. 2, $299 +2yr service agreement bandaids. Smooth. Thanks Verizon.

Verizon is getting on my nerves now with the changes in direction all the time. V-Cast, to VZ Navigator, I'm sure there is some other V-BS in the works next.

The iPhone is still a crappy phone. PHONE. But as a toy and convergence device, I am there. Begrudgingly I have to admit it is an amazing little toy, music player, gaming device, web browser. Oh yeah and by the way it makes phone calls. Sounds about as good as 2 paper cups linked by a shoestring, but the iPhone can make, and take, phone calls.

One of the most annoying thing about the iPhone sensation is the fact that there are 9trillion people that are out there saying how much they love it but forget to mention it is a crappy phone. And I wonder how many of them actually needed Flash, wifi, and Activesync in their phones. Probably 5%. Like so many other Apple products, they are actually good products but made so annoying by some of their insipid, lemming fans. The uninformed ones I mean. The ones that have a 160gb iPod Video but have 30mb of mp3s and no clue about ripping CDs or anything about DVD video conversions. I'm not talking about the Apple base that know the power & benefits. I'm talking about the true lemmings here and not making a grand statement about Mac stuff or mac users as I am on the fence myself.

Erik, I'm going to pick up an iPhone tomorrow actually. I hear the 3G is much improved in the phone department. (Still nowhere near the "good mark" probably.) I'll concede however that the first gen iPhone had a TERRIBLE phone.

I am finally done with Verizon, I can't stand their locked down OS anymore or the fact that it requires so much effort to add your own content onto the phone. Overall I just have this deep loathing for Verizon, and I'm honestly not sure how rational it is...

Anyways, as you've said and what I really am after in regards to the iPhone is the toy aspect of it. It just seems like a really bountiful platform with a lot of good developers working on it right now. I'm extremely stoked to see where this platform will be in the next 6 months or so, it has a lot of potential though...

Thanks for the review. I am fine with the crappiness of the phone because I really hate talking on the phone anyway. I wish AT&T had a better texting plan. The biggest disappointment will probably be the lack of MMS messaging. Now my girlfriend will have to email me naughty pictures? Lame. But everything else seems good.

edrex, there is no LACK of MMS, the iphone just cant do it. On my treo i could snap a picture and text it to all my friends. Iphone cant, also WHO THE HELL DECIDED THAT CUT AND COPY is not a needed feature. Also have you tried to text a friend someones number from your contact list? good luck.

POP3 works fine with the iphone 3G, i use mine with Gmail with no problems. The only issue is with some Imap servers and especially their calander. The icalander is pointless if i cant sync with my email, and so far it cant. THe phone quality is much improved over the original iphone, so thats a plus. The keyboard is really a "coool" item than a functioning item, i mean stuff ... try to type this address ... http://web.rollins.edu/~agarabaghi ... mainly focusing on the ~ hehe.....

I own a iphone 3g 16g, so im not biased.... just stating what ive noticed from the phone. Also if this post makes no sense, sorry its 745am and im still sleeping.
