http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0808/House_Dems_turn_out_out_the_light_but_GOP_keep_talking.html?showall

Seems the Dems in the House decided they wanted to leave for their vacation while the Reps stayed to debate energy policy. Pelosi is looking bad on this one. I guess they couldn't postpone their 5 week vacation.

Quote:
"Although this Democrat majority just adjourned for the Democrat 5-week vacation, House Republicans are continuing to fight on the House floor. Although the lights, mics and C-SPAN cameras have been turned off, House Republicans are on the floor speaking to the taxpayers in the gallery who, not surprisingly, agree with Republican energy proposals.

If I'm getting ready for a 5 week vacation in the middle of summer, I would have been out last Friday.

Now I keep hearing about how this proposed drilling won't produce results for 10 years. But since speculation drives oil pricing would we see an immediate effect at the pump? I'm personally still for high oil prices. I think demand spurs innovation.

nmballa, energy policy changes will produce results in the futures market the same day they are passed. Peak oil production may be 10 years out. I don't think anyone can make an accurate estimate of when and how much production will be achieved.

Congressmen have the best job in the world. They're usually not so high profile that people harass them in public, they get a killer retirement package, they get a nice housing allowance for D.C., everything they do in D.C. is no cost to them, they hardly ever go to work, they get to travel on Uncle Sam's dime, in the event they want to do something Uncle Sam doesn't pay for, an interest group will foot the bill, and they really are above the law in a lot of ways.

This why, if americans were's stupid, we would vote out every incumbant every election and make politics what is should be: a tempoary job, NOT a career.

Well just from what I've gathered this seems more like posturing to get the public to see them as the party that's "fighting for them". And/or they're being pressured by lobbyists to move on it. As we've seen it's difficult to know if even lifting a ban on off-shore drilling would have any immediate or sustainable long term effect.

What's BS is that when things get tough - they take a vacation. Evil or Very Mad
In the real world when things get tough, you sure as hell better finish the damn job I'm paying you for.
I really wish I could take a 5 wk vacation when I'm in the middle of an ugly, nasty, disgusting surgery that I don't want to be working on for the next 3 hours. Mad

Would you prefer they ignore the oil situation? Keep in mind Im not a Republican. I hate them just as much as the Dems...I think the idea of not drilling and only looking for alternatives is stupid course of action. We should be doing both. Get us off of foreign oil and in the mean time spend a load on researching other alternatives...

The whole thing sounds like partisan bickering.

Quote:
Republicans are angry that Democrats blocked them from a vote on allowing more offshore oil drilling and increasing domestic oil supplies.

Democrats have faulted Republicans for obstructing their efforts to stop market speculation, press oil companies to develop the leases they have and force the president to release oil from the strategic petroleum reserve. The result is that Congress is leaving town without a comprehensive energy bill.

Congress has an approval rating in the single digits. Were you actually expecting more that just partisan bickering?

approval ratings as it applies to congress as a whole are worthless.

partisan bickering? there's no bickering. this is the repubs taking advantage of an opportunity, throwing a little pep rally and getting some ink in the press...nothing more. dems are rolling their eyes - and if any of them do anything more than that, they are f*cking stupid.

jt09: I'm not sure what you're trying to say with your approval ratings comment. Are you trying to suggest that congress is doing a better job than their 9% approval rating indicates? Are you saying that you approve of congress right now? Please explain.

what does the approval rating of 350 people mean to anyone? congress doesn't get re-elected, congressmen do.

Regardless of political affiliation or what we believe should be the outcome, I think it is ridiculous that the Speaker is blocking a vote on the proposed energy policies.
