It's when u go up a quarterpipe and 180 pivot near the top. I haven't done one yet, but I think it would just be like nose pivoting on the ground. |

Kickturns don't hafta be done on a pipe, although the term is typically used in that setting. Anytime you just put pressure on the tail & turn your board is technically a kickturn. |

A kickturn is going up a quarterpipe or whatever, pushing down on your back kicktail, and turning back to your regular foot position right as you begin to go back down. They're sort of weird to explain.
As you feel yourself starting to slow down as you go up the tranny, push down on your back kicktail very lightly, then turn as slowly and smoothly as possible, finishing the turn right as you feel yourself starting to go back down. If you try and do a quick surfer slash you'll bail. Start out small and work your way up. Don't be discouraged if you don't figure it out right away, it takes a little while to get the feel for it.
Once you get those down you can pump before and after the kickturn to get more speed, and if you really get it down, you can powerslide your wheels around instead of pushing on the kicktail to turn. Good luck. _________________ things aren't that simple... |

I found it easier to learn how to kickturn by keeping my front foot in the middle of my board as opposed to near the front of the board. it makes the transfer to your tail quicker and easier.
Also, like any spin oriented trick, lead the turn with your shoulders and your body will just sort of follow. You also don't have to do it all in one motion to start. you can even break the motion up into two smaller turns. That makes it easier to ride away from it until you feel ready to try it all at once.
Take your time and practice makes perfect! Good luck!
