Hello,

Im still pretty new to wake boarding and i picked up an HL State, im just wondering if the black fins that come with the board are necessary for riding it. Do they provide any kind of advantage?

Thanks for you help!

I would take them off. Personally.

I haven't wakeboarded for about 3 years, then I started about a month ago. I rode my older boards with the fins on then I met some new friends who convinced me to take them off. It is sooooo much nicer now, gives it more of a snowboard feel.

It allows for more forgiveness with landings however it will take some slight adjustments to get used to for stability. Once you grasp the stability issues however, you probably won't ever go back.

Just got a new LF Byerly and I took the fins off, love it.

Basically the fins will make the board track hard and keep you in line, good for carving, however if you don't land in the right way say doing w2w or w2w 180's/360's you have a greater chance of face planting or losing control. Also allows for easier surface maneuvers and board rotation.

Most people recommend leaving them on until you get the basics of getting up and carving. After you get that down, take them off. No fins allows you to learn how to edge better and gives a loose feeling on the water. I just too mine off a few weeks ago and loved it. I put them back on the other weekend 'cause the water was choppy and I absolutely hated the tight feeling of the fins. I'll never go back Smile

I am still relatively new to baording, been riding about one season total now. After reading this and several other "fin" posts I took my 1.2" P wings off yesterday. I can honestly say that I will never ride with a center fin on any board again. I was immediately able to do surface 180's effortlessly without a single face plant all day. I also pulled off a butterslide that started in the center of the wake and continued across the wake and out into the flats. Tracking and stability is affected but after one day I feel like I am already edging better also.

deathbycatcus, are you saying that you will have a better chance to faceplant with fins?

well he mentioned that it is easier to faceplant with fins on and that means its harder to face plant and less likely to happen without fins on and i have been w2wing alot and faceplating alot so id like to have someone tell me and id rather not have to find out on my own that im gonna faceplant the same or more without fins

Faceplanting for me has been a common occurrence up until yesterday. I rode all day and did not faceplant one time. I personally believe this was due to the removal of my center fins since I did nothing else differently. I would also say that for me once I realized I was not going to faceplant on a surface 180, I felt more at easy on the board and did better in my newbie style wake jumping. I landed one nearly W2W jump completely sideways and was able to ride it out. With fins I am sure I would have knocked one of my eyes out of the back of my head. Laughing

Smile take them to the water with you and if you hate it you can stick them back on. I bet you are going to like it better. Let me know how it turns out for you.
