So last year we were barely able to get him to swim, he would just stand about chest deep to stay cool, this year jumping off of rocks

Reminds me of a dog we ran into canoeing down a river. We found a huge cliff to jump off of. While we were up there juming off this dog came up acting like he wanted to jump too. I threw a stick off the cliff and away he went. It had to be 50 60 feet....maybe more. It was a pretty cool thing to see.

Ok, so how did you get him to like the water? Our pup is 7 months old and will hang out on the boat, he really likes the swim platform, but freaks out if he falls in the water. He runs at the edge of the lake, and through our pond, but really isn't wanting to "swim".

Oh, he likes to hang out on the LF Party Couch, too!

Here he is. He doesn't look too stressed out!
He did try to get back on the bow of the boat from the Party Couch. That didn't work out too well for him. Swam straight to the swim platform when he fell in, but it freaked him out!

nice pic, got my Chesapeake retriever flying off of our dock. My dad had him in a couple dock comps and he got a good 15 feet, but the winner was 16

I have never been able to get our dog in the water. She fell in one year, trying to cross between the houseboat and another boat, and could barely swim because she freaked out so bad.

Lauri H, my other boxer swam, he is also such a people dog he will do anything I do, so he followed my daughter and i over and kept jumping every time we would.

Hollywood, funny thing is that we had him out on the dock yesterday and wouldn't jump for anything

Dragonlady8, he is actually pretty slender that picture is deceiving, but he is a big boy probably around 75 pounds

How did you get him to get used to swimming? I have a 6-month old catahoula pup and he doesn't mind the water at all, but when I put him in he instantly goes back to the stairs and gets out of the lake. I want to teach him to love the water... i mean he has crazy webbed feet so he should

Let your pup learn to love the water when he's ready. By forcing him, he's going to hate being near the water.

.... there's that saying about leading a horse to water, but you can't make him drink...... pretty much same theory.

david-d, if the pup sees you having fun in the water, eventually he'll decide he wants to be there as well.

Proud of my two, too: couple of weeks ago, our 2-1/2 yr-old took a flying leap off the swim deck for the first time, and the 9-mo old started swimming on her own, without trying to climb on my wife's head the whole time...

I lucked out by teaching my dog... he was on the beach carrying this stick around like it was best thing in the world, so I would throw it in, a little deeper each time and he eventually started swimming. Video link below

Our last lab was afraid to jump off the dock
I tossed him off it and lost his fear and took flying leaps very frequently from that time on.
but he was that type of dog.

cameraboy, similar experience... hadn't had the dog out in deep water until we took him on my uncle's floating house. Kids were throwing balls back and forth on the deck teasing the dog. One of the throws landed the ball in the water, and dumby wumby chased after it. In slow motion he locked up is front paws and skidded right of the end of the dock! Shocked

Next thing I know, I can't leave him off his leash without having to deal with wet dog! Evil or Very Mad

yea, certain types of dogs have to be forced into something before they realize it's not going to be harmful. He was that way with the basement stairs too, and so was our current lab. I had to literally drag them up and then down the stairs one time, and they instantly lost their fear of the stairs too. But I think that could be disasterous with the wrong type of dog.

Well I am back in Orlando now, but yesterday I was up at my lake house in Georgia and I coaxed Scotch into the water!! He didn't like going down the stairs on my dock so I took him to this beach type area where he could walk in gradually, and I threw a stick in and he just loved it! I'm so happy... I thought he was going to be afraid of the water forever.
