does the tower make a difference???

Besides looking good and having a place for speakers, lights and boards, does a tower actually help with going higher. Does it make a big difference?? Right now our rope is connected to the back of the boat, I want a tower, but only if it serves more of a purpose than looks. Please help me out?????????
