Not my fiancee, my new dog.
She is a great dog to us, but she is becoming comfortable with her surroundings and our property. She has now shown aggression twice to innocent passer-bys.
The first was my very nice neighbor who was saying hi. She growled, barked and full on charged him. Only stopping at 2ft from him when he stood his ground.
The second was yesterday as I was cutting the grass. She ran off at two ladies walking in the street. I couldn't hear if she growled or not with the mower running, but her hair was all up on her spine. The ladies would not walk past my house on the next lap. They stopped and turned around.
I can't have that kind of a risk running around. She is very docile if you try and get her to come to you, or at least acknowledge her. But because of her breed, our instinct is to ignore her. Well that incites guard mode. And because she's a pit mix, people will take that the wrong way, and somebody is going to get hurt, or she will get shot, or I will get in trouble.
I am trying to adopt her out if possible. If I can't find anything she's going to the shelter. I have too much to risk from something happening.
Any ideas? I really like this dog too, so it's going to be hard.
BTW Background info: She walked up to my house, and was just as sweet as can be. Needed medical attention. Got her all fixed up, gave her a bath, cleaned her up. Awesome dog. I have no fence in my yard, so I was not properly prepped for this. She is never on a leash, I let her roam since she stays with me everywhere.

| jt09, trying. The local Pit rescue is terrible. My good friend runs a rescue, but can't take her due to the breed. He is getting me info on his next choices in terms of the best ones in our area.

haugy, You know I do rescue with bulldogs. I need to tell you that a dog that shows aggression like this needs to either be put down or re-homed to a home that KNOWS how to deal with aggression.
The sad truth is, that due to her breed, and the aggression (even without biting) she should just be put down. There are too many of them being breed. Too many of them overwhelming the rescue groups, shelters and kind hearted people like yourself. There is not the time or the money to rehab a pit bull that shows ANY aggression, sadly there are just too many.
I suggest getting in touch with your local Pit/bulldog/bull breed rescue group. They might help you with your choices. And who knows, maybe they have a better answer for you.

booby bunny, while normally I would agree with you. I can't.
Rehabilitation for this one would work, but the simple fact is, she is viewed as a monster before she even gets a chance. If I had a fence I wouldn't even think about giving her up. She's great with kids, dogs, and people. But both times she's run at people, they have been on the border of the property.
My German shepherd has the same aggression. The only difference is he knows where to stop. But that's because we raised him from a pup. He lets out alot of his energy in the fenced backyard. While the pit stays cooped up in a garage all day. You step on the property of my parents house, you will have a GSD staring at you intently. If he doesn't like you, he will let you know. If you don't acknowledge him, he will let you know.
Or how about the two Labradors that attacked my neighbors dog, confronted my fiancee and growled at her on our own property? What's the difference there?
I'm not defending what the pit did, but it's not worthy of death. Both times she has stopped short. But it's because of the mentality of people, they are monsters with no potential. And I don't want them to have to worry about that. They all know she is a rescue dog. Which is a good reason to be cautious. So many rescues have had unpredictable actions, from all breeds. If I had raised her as a pup, and gotten her used to more people, I would bet there would be no problems.
I would bet my Jeep that if you came to see this dog in person, she would win you over in 10 minutes. I have never been a fan of owning a pit. So for me to rescue one says alot. There is a Pit rescue in Georgia I am trying to get in touch with.

haugy, I am sure she would.
My only point is there are too many staffordshire/american pit bull/ american bulldogs out there with aggression issues.
So why not build a fence? I can get my rescue group to send you a gift card to Home depot for 100 bucks to help you build a fence.

booby bunny, add two more zeros to that number and I can get a fence.
Even with me doing the labor it's just too expensive right now. Fence v. wedding.
Sorry dog, you're screwed.

| There are tons of dogs out there wtih aggression issues, just because its a pit mix doesnt mean it should be put down. Thats just ludacris to say it should be put under because its part of a bull breed. You really need to find the dog someone who can be a pack leader, teach rules boundaries and limitations and take the dog on long walks. If you really wanna try and keep her maybe you should get some Ceasar millan dvd or books. It will be a little harder to train a bully breed because they just never want to give up but you will never find a more loyal dog out there. I understand you found her and it really shouldnt be your responsibilty to take her in but its just going to hurt the dog to pass her on to the next person. There is no telling how many people have thrown her out before she got to you. The Ceasar way really does work though. I have a pit and he doesnt do anything unless I say its ok and with that breed thats how it has to be or they will control you. good luck with everything.

I was weedeating, my other neighbor came up to tell me the pit had been chasing her dog. She came around the fence from nowhere and the pit nipped her.
Waiting for animal control or the police to take her away. I hate for it to go down like that, but there is no way I can keep her overnight. The neighbor is being cool about it though.
Well UPDATE: The animal control guy works with a girl who runs a rescue. Animal control guy called her, she came and picked her up. At least now someone will try and properly find her a home.
I thought for sure she was doomed. He even said, if she had not picked her up, she would have gone straight to the vet for euthanization.
