Computer question reguarding installing operating system

I have a powerbook, and have my copy of OSX saved to an external HD. It's not installed or anything, it's just the package like what you would click to install on the laptop. Can i install this from the external HD that it's on? Or do i need to burn it to a CD first?

Anything else i should know about this?

Unless it's a bootable image of OSX, I don't believe you can do so... If you could use another mac, and actually install OSX onto the external drive, then plug it back in, you should be sweet.
