I just started wakeboarding last summer with my brothers. I was wondering if there are any good books or anything out there for beginners or intermediate boarders for learning tricks and such?

As well our boat is fairly new and all of us wakeboard yet my parents don't want to get a tower for the boat, how essential is a tower for when we start becoming better? Or is there something else that will work just as well like a pole or something?

I second this question. I have a Proline 24 Sport with tow straps on either side of the engine. It's a center console and I don't want to remove the bimeny (sp) because I like to use it for fishing. How much of a problem is it to wakeboard without a tower? Is there an easily installable pole or device that can raise the tow height?

Welcome both of you. You can ride all you like without a tower. It's still lots of fun. You may want to consider it after you gain some skills and decide if you want to really air it out.

Welcome both of you. As far as learning goes there are several instuctional dvds you can buy. One that I have heard many good things about is "The Book" It is a 5 disc set that teaches you everything, the basics like getting up and carving, spins from a 180 all the way up to a 720. Inverts from a backroll and a tantrum up to more advanced tricks. I think you can also buy these sepreate instead of the 5 disk pack too. But there are many others if you don't want that one. Detention 2012 is the newest one I think, it just now came out.

And you asked if there is anything you can use besides a tower.....yes there is. It is called a Pylon. It is basically a pole that goes in the center of your boat, and you can put board racks on it as well. Here is a like to one at boardstop.

I'm sure if you looked it up on google you could find pictues of them on a boat so you can see what they look like.

Okay thanks for the help guys. When I was little our old checkmate boat only had a pole so I didn't you could ski/wakeboard without it one, but our new boat only has the little hook thing behind the boat and my brothers are thinking they are getting good enough that they need some elevation, but I still think they have a ways to go. So I was just wondering how advance you need to be to start using one. It'll be ages before i'll be that advance but they are jumping the wake and doing other little tricks.

So it sounds like the pylon will do the trick, especially if it has board racks, we usually take out 3-4 boards so it gets a little crowded.

I read about a book called 'on the edge'. Does anyone know if it is any good?

Hey, thanks for the advice. After perusing the items on boardstop I came across a similar item to the pylon called a monkey bar. It uses the same strap over the bow of the boat but comes back to a bar that goes from one side of the boat to the other.
