newbie needs help

I attempted wakeboarding for the first time this weekend. As a newbie I just wanted to know if a tower is helpful. I was being pulled behind a Malibu ski boat without a tower and I felt like I was just drinking water.

A tower will make very little difference for a first time wakeboarder. You just need to work on your technique for getting up.

I'll second HHI Dave. Once you get the technique down, you won't be drinking as much water anymore.

The tower gives you a little bit more upwards pull out of the water, but as the guys above say, its all about technique. Remember this sport is pretty young and it wasnt that long ago that towers didnt even exist (in a wakeboarding context)
