|
|
I decided that I should try wakeskating this summer, so I made my own board. It turned out pretty well, but I wish I would have made a 3 stage rocker instead of a continuous one. Maybe next time.
This has about 2" of rocker to it, and it cups from side to side about a 1/4". I used 4 pieces of 1/8" baltic birch and glued it up with titebond III (waterproof) glue. I used epoxy to seal it, but I almost wish that I hadn't. It was a pain to work with, and I had a very difficult time getting the results that I wanted from it.
Tips or suggestions for next time would be much appreciated.
Here is the form:
This is the template that I traced onto the glued up board.
The press:
And here is the finished product.
Here is my little boat with the bimini top that I put on this weekend.

Damn dude that thing looks sick. Almost professionally done. Go 3 stage rocker and concave deck next time. Makes such a big difference when riding. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

I'm definitely going to try a 3 stage next time. It certainly will be easier to make.
I did make the deck concave, but only by 1/4". How much is recommended? |

wow, that's actually really, really cool.
How did you have access to a vacuum press? Was it sort of a homemade jobby? If it was, how did you do it?
people were talking on the other site about vacuum presses...i have some bi-level top decks that I want to fiberglass and some people said that the flex might cause the fiberglass to delam, so a vacuum press would be the best option. I guess you can sort of rig one up but I have not investigated this far. _________________ J.L.A. Is Snowboarding

I have access to a vacuum press at work. I've made the bags for them before, that isn't too hard if you can find the right materials to do it with. The vacuum pump on the other hand, I'm not sure about. |

| What was the problem with the epoxy? I glued mine with tite bond 3 as well, and was planning on using epoxy to seal it. I thought you just painted it on with a brush? What other options are there? Lots of coats of spar varnish? |

wake223, that's a flat deck.
This is a concave deck:
Concave on a wakeskate means the deck is thicker in areas and somewhat shaped like a skateboard with raised rails and a thick kicktail. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

I put the epoxy on too thick and it all ran to the ends. I'm not sure what the other options are. |

That makes sense, thank you. I'll have to make a trip to the local shop to see what I need to do to accomplish that on my next try. |

I will look tomorrow to see if I saved the Autocad drawing on my computer at work. I could probably dimension and scan it and post it here for you if I do. |
