Can you all take a look at this video clip and let me know what you think about the amount of pop/air I am getting and whether I am properly doing the progressive edge?
Here is a link...

No not progressive.
Slow it down. Look at the amount of spray you produce at the 1st 4 feet coming in. (a lot) Then look at the amount of spray you produce at the last 4 feet. (nearly none) |

So, I want to ease into it more in the beginning and get more aggressive in the end?
Do you feel like I should be clearing the wake considering the width and the height? |

The wake is small, but big enough.
I would shorten the rope to 50' or so, to get a bit into the cleaner/larger wake and to reduce the w2w distance.
You need to start into it slower. If you look at the video 2 things jump out at me that are "not progressive"
1. you turn your board toward the wake immediately, the rope comes tight, you squat due to the pressure and you accelerate towards the wake. You need to keep this pressure building until you are in the air.
2. 4 feet before the wake, the pressure disappears, your board comes back under you, you stand up straight, and run into the wake. You need to stay leaned back on the rope, thru the wake. You are off edge when you hit the wake. (board flat - I can't see the bottom decals)
There are 1000 ways to describe this.
You can tune you progressive edge by building the pressure on your hands. As hard as it is to believe, going fast at the wake has nothing to do with the progressive edge. Just get the rope VERY tight at the top of the wake and you will jump higher.
For me, my "feeling" is, when I am on the outside getting ready to cut it.
1) lean back on rope
2) get feet in front of body
3) edge board toward wake only slightly
4) pull toes toward knees only slightly
5) about 4-5 feet from the wake do #3 and #4 more and more until you are in the air.
My 2cents... |

I know this is a cable, and I know it is a raley, but it has everything to do with the progressive edge...

No wake, big jump, generated by the body coming off the water (like what happens when you hit the wake) and the line tension pulling the rider upright in stance and up into the air. |

I'm seeing what you mean in your example and the video clip. Would it help if I practiced by not going so far away from the wake? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Absolutely.
Start with a 4' approach, once you notice you pop up and your shoulders go toward the boat (enough that you need to lower the handle to your waist to keep from landing on your face), then you can take it back from the wake a bit. But really just drift in until you get the pop you will need. |

Just watched it again. Here's my .02 worth for HS W2W....
Start just outside the wake and take a long, hard cut away from the wake. Once you've made your cut out, flatten out and WAIT... Wait for the boat to start pulling you back towards the wake. Don't just turn and cut back towards the wake, you'll just lose line tension and build too much speed too quickly.
As you begin to get pulled towards the wake, take a more seated position and gradually build some speed. You don't need to haul ass toward the wake and you don't need to be hauling ass when you get to the wake. Instead concentrate on keeping tension on the rope and keeping your board on edge through the entire trick. Also, keep your eye on the wake during the approach... like keeping your eye on the ball when batting.
I was frequently told to stand tall at the TOP of the wake, but if you wait until the top, you've waited too long. Begin to stand up at the BOTTOM of the wake. This way you will be standing tall by the time you get to the top.
Wait for the pop, keep the handle in close and maintain a good postion. It will also help if you don't look down but keep your eyes on the shore in the direction you're riding. Land on edge and continue to edge away from the wake.
OK, there are a bunch of people here who can do this way better than I can, but here's a short vid of me going W2W behind my buddy's 28' parasail boat. Check out the frothy marshmallow of a wake. It still packs some energy though.
Hope this helps. _________________ Hilton Head Wake Sports.com
