|
|
I'm living in an apartment right now with three other guys. Last week I put a plastic water pitcher on our electric stove and didn't realize the burner was still hot, and it melted some plastic off onto. Don't know exactly what happened, but the next day my roommate took a butter knife to the plastic, attempting to chip away the plastic and now there is a big chunk of the stove top missing. Does any one know if there is a way of repairing this type of damage or how much it would cost to replace? I'm sure someone has done something like this before.
Thanks |

They sell appliance paint at Home Depot. I would just put several coats on until the chip goes away. If you cannot match the color just paint the whole thing. _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em... |

I would reccommend against vette74's idea if you are talking about a stove with a glass top. You would have to contact the manufacturer to see if you could get a new top, or just go buy a used stove for $100 _________________ Brent B

It depends on the stove top but my friend had to replace the top of his and it was over a grand. He has a really nice stove top but still, those things aren't cheap. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

pooser, guessing in your apartment it's just a cheapo electric range.
See what Vette said, but also, look closer in the paint department at the local store - they should have an appliance repair kit (in various colors no less) that will fix the problem well enough. Many appliances are porcelain coated, and regular paint might not get it done. These kits are made for this specific purpose.
If you can, go to a store like OSH or ACE and get someone who knows their head from their arsehole. If you go to Depot or Lowes you will likely get no help at all. _________________

Thanks for the help guys.
Wakebrad, not what I want to hear. I found a whole new unit for $300 dollars buy it now price shipped to my door, for like a floor model and they have other wodels at areound $500 so hopefully we'll be well under $1000
chavez, The only problem is that the chip is right in the middle of the burner. We used the burner yesterday and could see tiny chips forming on the underside of the surface. We could try one of those appliance repair kits and try to refrain from the use of the burner til the end of the year and see if we get charged when we move out.
Anyone know if you can replace just the stove top portion or just the cooking surface and where you might be able to find this? I really don't think we should replace the whole unit (stove and oven) when the oven works fine. |

pooser, why don't you just ignore it and hope the apartment doesn't dock you money for it? Just use the other burners. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Can it be covered up by a burner splash tray? Take a pic. _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em... |

Is it just the stove coil? Those are like $20 to replace.

Wakebrad, It's a college run apartment and they're having a cleaning crew come through tommorow. They clean the stove, and they're assholes, so I'm 99% sure they're going to report us.
jryoung, it's a flat top electric stove. IT's basically one solid glass(i think) piece with the coils underneath.
vette74, I don't think so. There is no real way to cover it up.
I found a website that sells parts so it's gonna be at most $200. I'm gonna keep trying to look for a way to repair it though. |

I agree, take a pic. I am fully confused as to what is chipped now. _________________

That's the type of stove top we got. We chipped the front left burner. The red glowy thing:). |

Can you see it without the burner on? _________________ There'll be two dates on your tombstone/ And all your friends will read 'em/ But all that's gonna matter is that little dash between 'em... |

Now it makes sense. That is likely tempered glass. I don't think there is any safe way to repair it.
Good luck, I am out. _________________

I have an expensive Thermador range that we had the same thing happen to, but after the plastic cooled, it peeled off effortlesly. Your buddy should have heated it up a bit. Oh well, here's what I'd do- Call the apt manager and say that you were about to boil some water in a pot and had the burner hot. When you set the pot on the stove you heard a 'pop'! Appearently, there was a little water on the bottom of the pot and... You want them to give you a new stove.
Unless your buddy left chisel scratches all over the place... _________________
