Posted: Jan 19, 2008 3:05 pm Post subject: Boats around the $40-$45k Range |
|
|
I am looking to spend around $40 to $45k on a boat and having a tough time deciding what to buy. The new Moomba XLV seems like it would be around that price and then I was looking at Malibus and Supras and M.C's and Centurions that are a few year old. I want to keep my next boat for a good 5 to 10 years and I want reliability, features (Ballast, hot water, heater, depth gauge, PP) and a decent stereo would be nice.
I have never even ridden or driven a V drive and have done all my wakeboarding behind an 18 foot i/o, so I have little experience with these wakeboats, I just drool over them in magazines and have been waiting a long time for the time when I could actually buy one. I live in Canada so I'll probably try to get one from the us since the pricing is so much better. There isn't really any places to test drive them and I want to get it this spring (soon). Next summer is going to be the best with a new boat, so any and all advice is welcomed.

Have you thought about a tige. I saw the new models today and they are Nice. With all the boat shows going on you can get a centroin, tige, or a fully loaded moombe for your price range. These boats last just as long and have the resale value. I am no longer a mastercraft or nautique fan because their prices are outrageous.

The Moomba and Supra's are pretty much the same boat. There are a few differences, but they're built in the same factory. Some small differences are like the aluminum in the engine bay is a raw finish on the Moomba, but wrinkle-finished in the Supra. The Supra's have more features like the roswell light bar and speakers, and X-5 cargo rack, but you could add that stuff later down the road, or put your own equipment on there. They've got a pretty big markup though. 1 dealer tried to sell me a standard loaded 24SSV for $63,000 and I ended up picking up a Gravity Games Supra for less then $60K.... Same dealer wanted less than $50K for a 24SSV

The resale value of a moomba, tige, supra, mb or centurion will not be as good as a MC, CC or Malibu. You say you'll keep your boat for 5-10 years, but once you have dropped 45k on a boat, it's becomes much easier to justify spending an extra 10k a few years later for a new/newer one. One thing to consider is that CC offers a 5 year warranty on their boats, so if you get a newer CC, and you are close to a dealership in the US, you can get any problems fixed under warranty.
In that price range you could pick up on '06-05 Malibu VLX, an '06-05 Mastercraft X1, or an '05-04 Correct Craft 210. Any of these are superb wakeboard boats, and will be reliable for a long time. I've got a friend with an '06 VLX here in Tennessee who would probably take 45k or less for his. If you're interested I'll ge thim to send you some pics. You'd have to figure out shipping though...

sorry, Im new to this. Sounds like you know how much to spend, and due to the fact that our dollar aint worth "mierda" to yours congrat on the better deal! Im new to boating thing and I went new because I didnt want to take on somebody's elses mechanical problem. People dont always treat their boats well and if they find themselves in a financial pinch theyll say anything to get rid of it. and then your into it way more than you wanted and your whole boating experiance has left a sour taste in your mouth. Im not saying thats how it is, thats just my thinking and Im not wanting to take that financial risk. Go back and choose a brand and and options and have a blast and enjoy! Youll feel even better when your boat circles ya in the water bringin your handle back you let go on your last trick. your friends and family will think your the greatest and can still try all those insane tricks as everyone else and could care less about the bling factor and how much more you could of spent. I went this route and its been fun.http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.php?page=out&id=2623
if you plan on keepin it for that long go for it.

Check out the "recommended" boat loan terms for various price ranges on this site:
http://www.discoverboating.com/buying/financing/loancalculator.aspx
At a boat show last year, I saw an x-star quoted with a 25 year term and payment around $400 a month.
What are people typically doing? I've heard of quite a bit of people with 15 year term loans in the 40K+ range. As a first time buyer I would understand the safety and convenience of a longer term with the option to pay it off sooner, but is this what most people do?

That is madness. Cash for toys is the best policy.

a 25 year loan on a 80-90K boat I wonder what that boat will be worth in 5 years, when you still owe 90K

Ya, I think that is a dumb idea. I will be able to pay most of it in cash and plan to pu the rest on my line of credit while I pay the remianing bit off over summer.
The more I look, the more options there seems to be. I really like the Enzo, but not sure about the wake on those boats. I also like the Moombe and a few others. I'm just really looking for a good deal on a good boat, hopefully a 23 footer for the room.

Do yourself a favor, buy a leftover or a boat that's 1-2 years old. Let someone else take the hit.
Not going to mention brands, but you get what you pay for and if you want to keep it for 5-10 years go for a well built boat (2 or 3 brands come to mind) Look at some 10 year old boats and see what brands hold up the best over time.
You need to drive and ride behind some different ones since you're coming from an I/O. It'll feel like going from a station wagon to a BMW!

What does everyone think about the Supra 24SSV? I'm looking at an 06 with the GG package.

| It's a bitch to tow. It killed my z71 tahoe. Great wake with 2k in it. Just hope you have a deep wallet for gas...

The longest I ever tow it on a normal basis is about 6 blocks to the lake, but ya, I hadn't really thought much about the gas while on the lake.
02Lighting, I know you really like your Malibu, but I didn't know you had a Supra before, how do they compare? I feel more overwhelemed then ever. I like so many boats it's hard to really choose. I do know I want a lot of room for the family, and some boats like the VLX are rated for 11 people why others like the 24SSV are rated for 16, so it would seem that the interior space is much larger.

leviwynnyk,
I love the Supra. I rode behind one a while back and liked the wake. Plenty of room inside as well. But for room malibus are amazing. More room in the cockpit than any other wakeboat i've been in. They seem to focus on more room in the cockpit rather than the bow.
I'd go with the supra though. Good boat and they don't look bad at all.

Ya, I've been kind of digging the Supra now, although I'm not sure if I prefer how the bow is kind of raised up and more like a bed. Malibu is my first choice but the LSV is pretty steep in price. For a group of about 5 or 6 guys, is a 21 footer plenty? More then an I/O?

I didn't own one. I rode behind the XTP boat numerous times though. They have a 24ssv with the big block. That is a great boat for space, and it makes a great wake if you put an extra 2k in it. However, it drives like a tank. I mean it absolutely plows through the water and is the hardest boat I've ever driven to dock and get on a trailer. It made my BU and Xstar feel like porches, as opposed to a tractor trailer.
Also, without the big block, that boat is somewhat underpowered. With the engine in that boat, we easily burned through $100 in gas in a day taking sets. You should ask yourself 2 questions regarding room: #1 How many times do you really think you'll have 16 people on your boat (trashing it, wanting to ride, etc.); and #2 Is it worth all the extra gas to run a boat that big on the days that you don't need the space.
With my 21 VLX, I typically have between 6 and 8 people on the boat and It's never felt that cramped. However, the BU's have much more room inside than an X1/x2 or a CC 210.

02lighting, you make some good points which I'll definitley have to consider. Maybe 24 is just being greedy in terms of space.

| I've got a Supra and it's great.... I've towed heavier boats with a 1/2 ton 2WD truck, which is the same as a Tahoe Z71, so I can't see how 02lightnings truck was killed, unless you're leaving the bags full and towing.

what's a reasonable % rate to expect on a 15-20 year loan on a boat. Assuming credit is an above average rating?
The boat I've got now I paid cash in full (only $12k though) and I'm looking to upgrade to something this winter/spring. Hoping to put about $15k down and loan out on the rest.
Looking at something a couple years older (loose the initial depreciation hit), probably in the $35-40k range, that I'll probably keep two-three years.
Want to get the lowest payments possible and hopefully sel lit for close to what I owe on it in a couple years. Is this reasonable?
What could I expect my payments to be? more or less.

| 35k at 15 years at 7% is approximately $330/month. You usually can't go over 10 years unless you borrow over 25k. 7% is about average these days.

With rates dropping like they have been you may be able to wait a few months and get a solid rate. I almost traded my boat in this year on a new one, but I wasn't willing to give up my 5% interest rate.

I hope a lot of people aren't taking 15 years to pay off their boats. The interest on one boat over that time would be a lot of money.
