I need to tackle something thats been bugging me. I have an old home theater sub that I havn't used for a long time. The reason being is something is wrong with it. It seems to have decent output, but sound tone is distorted. Also when there are no low sounds to drive it, it makes a rythmic clicking; as if it has a heartbeat.

So does this sound as if something in the amp is blown and needs replaced or is this typical of a voicecoil or other issue with the speaker itself?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

kavlock99, sounds like interference or a short circuit.

Either way, subs are relatively cheap, I'd just toss it or give it to an electronics dork to try and sort out.

kavlock99, it's not hard, but you have to make sure the impedance is correct. Some of these units might not be a standard 4 or 8ohm.

Sounds like the voice coil is bad. When they go, sometimes you hear a weird low clicking sound. Push the woofer all the way in by hand and listen for the clicking sound. You should also feel a rubbing sensation to go with the click.
