What are your thoughts on the new war between HD DVD and Blu-ray? Is this another format war where only one will survive, or will there just be both formats? I am weary to choose either one, since most movie companies either support one or the other. I'm just afraid this might be a VHS/Betamax war where the party that supports one is going to be screwed by choosing a format with no future.

personally, i think there will be one winner, because its just going to be too complicated to carry both. think of how video rental stores will be, in the next 5 years they will be carrying dvd, HD dvds, and blu-ray, and some movies will only be in one format or the either. So is it too early to buy a HD dvd player, or should i wait to buy a player in the near future that supports both formats?

for those of you that don't know, the only major difference between HD and blu-ray is that the blu-ray discs have 20 more gigabytes of storage.

on a side note, my brother went ahead and bought the xbox 360 HD DVD player, and all i can say is the thing is awesome, the quality blew me away. i watched king kong a couple hours ago and it was spectacular.

Personally with the advent of HD VOD I think DVD's themselves are going to be in survival mode shortly.

Sony has always made good format descisions. I mean, just look at how well Betamax and MiniDisc did. And now their success with the PSP and its UMD format, just goes to show us that Sony is never wrong when it comes to this stuff. And the same goes for their proprietary Blu-Ray technology. Sony will definitly come out on top of this battle.

HD DVD will be the winner in this deal. The name alone gives it a HUGE advantage. The player prices need to come down before either becomes relevant. $400-500 for a HD DVD or $1,000 for a blu-ray, give me a break.

Michael Bay: Microsoft wants both HD formats to fail
>> From movie director Michael Bay on his blog:
Quote:

What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth.

Warner Bros. Goes Blu-ray Exclusive
>> From the press release:
Quote:

In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Meyer. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

Warner Home Video will continue to release its titles in standard DVD format and Blu-ray. After a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008.

"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," said Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," said Tsujihara. "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future.

thats a major blow to the HDdvd war. But I could car less now that im invested in both formats.

Jensen, not only that, Blu ray isn't exactly dead when it comes to the Porn industry.

Sony opens up to Blu-ray porn
Stiff objections go flaccid in face of demand

Iain Thomson, vnunet.com 31 Jul 2007
Sony appears to be weakening on the role of Blu-ray in the pornography industry.

The company has said that it will not allow its media to be used for pornography, but a survey of sellers at the Adult Treasure Expo 2007 in Chiba, Japan has shown that while Sony claims this policy is unchanged it is supporting the production of Blu-ray porn in other countries.

"In Japan, there are some problems. Companies cannot press Blu-ray discs because they cannot touch adult-related contracts," Kiyotaka Konno, director of administration at Assist, a Japanese company that authors and replicates DVDs for the adult industry in Japan, told IDG News.

"So we asked some makers in Taiwan to do the work, and then we import the discs back to Japan. The Taiwanese company was able to obtain a pressing machine from Sony and will start mass production in August."

The first films, 'JK,' 'Sex Vacation in Guam' and 'Eroist', are already being shipped back into Japan.

Blu-ray has already lost the market for the pornography industry in the United States, with most producers standardising on the HD DVD format, as it is cheaper to use.

Experts believe the decision of the porn industry to standardise on the VHS rather that Betamax format was a key factor in the last format wars.

All I know is that Blockbuster has Blue-ray and not HD DVD. That's not a good sign for HD DVD. You can find HD DVD players for around $200 now and I've almost bought one a couple times just because our DVD player seems to skip toward the end of discs.

Why, other than owning a PS3, would anyone invest $ in to either format right now?

We are seriously not far off of streaming HD, downloadable HD, etc. These silly shiny discs are going to be completely obsolete before you know it.

That said, when the winning format's players get in to the 100$ range, I would then invest. Until then, you are wasting your cash on early gen (read: bug prone) technology (exception given to PS3).

chavez, Damn, you said it before me.

If your going to get Blu Ray you might as well by the PS3 cause its way cheaper.

Is that the only difference between Blu Ray and HD DVD, 20 gigs more? And if those articles said something about it, I was to lazy to read.

i only picked up a bluray player because it was priced good, 250 bucks plus 5 free movies. plus its too expensive to buy hddvd movies for the xbox 360 when you'll watch them maybe once or twice, i'd rather rent blu-ray from blockbuster.

and streaming HD sounds great, but not when only dial up is offered at my house Crying or Very sad

You knew that had to happen because Walmart decided to carry blu-ray exclusively. Who would have ever thought that every trailer park would have an abundance of blu rays players. Laughing

They had a clip on the news how Wal-Mart was discontinuing them. There was 1 guy in all of wal-mart in the HD section and everyone else getting blu-ray. The reporter went up to him and said they were discontinuing it and he was like "whaaaa!??" Laughing

Wal-Mart is phasing them out, slowly. Best Buy - same. Just a month ago they were marketing the hell out of both formats and both players, so instead of phasing them out they'll just relegate HDDVD content to the back corner. They will really piss non-tech-news-savvy people off if they just say "nope sorry! We're done with those now see ya!. Enjoy your $400 bookend!"

The most interesting news to come out of this... the death knell of the Xbox 360. Due to this format was ending, expect to hear what Xbox is doing next, way, way sooner than normal for a console's lifecycle.

Erik, do you have HD or something??? I didn't mean to offend anyone with that little story. Laughing It was just funny cause he was the only guy in the store shopping for HD and everyone else was in the blu-ray section.

theres rumors stirring that microsoft may incorporate bluray players into their systems as soon as may 2008.

IMO i'd push HD streaming since that is the true future.
