wife wants a gps for christmas.

I am completely lost. I tried to find last thread on here that I saw on Gps, but couldn't. anywho thoughts and opinions on Garmin vs TomTom

buy Garmin for sure. I sell both and have seen way more issues with tomtom than with garmin. Garmin has been doing GPS for over 12 years. They know what their doing.

Ditto, Garmin all the way. I bought a 200W for my parent,s for X-Mas, my local BesyBuy price matched West Marine on-line for $240.

My girlfriend absolutely DOES NOT want a gps system for chirstmas or for any gift, but I want to get her one anyway because she gets lost every time she closes her eyes.

eeven73, Garmin and Magellan only.

IMO Magellans are easier to use. They use the same maps and a very similar routing engine to the Garmin models.

ONLY buy at Costco if you can. Why? Well other than what amounts to a free lifetime warranty, they won't charge you a 15% restocking fee if your wife ends up hating it. And if you get a year down the line, and a newer model comes out, you can return it!

Costco has the Magellan 3225 for 179 right now (this is a flipping STEAL at that price). They also have the Nuvi 650 @ 299. These are online, but in store you can get the 3225 for $199.

Personally, I have the Magellan 4250 which is currently 349.

I went through 2 Magellans, two Garmin Nuvis, and two TomToms before settling in on the Magellan 4250. Best bang for the buck I found. The Magellan 3225 is not as robust as the 4250 I have, but it does use the same maps and routing engine. It also has text-to-speech, which is awesome when you are in an unfamiliar area.

I made a thread about this a while ago and chavez helped me decide on the magellan 4040. I got it for my girlfriend and she loves it. Its easy to use and has a large screen so you dont have to squint just to see where your turning next.

Isn't the GPS considered an electronic item and therefore returns must be made within 90 days at Costco?

I just got the Garmin 200w and it is great. Not too expensive, but the wide screen, quick route calculations and tons of points of interest make it great. I didn't want all the features like a music player and traffic updates, and the garmin works great for that. I would definitely recommend it.

my brother got a TomTom for christmas and so far he loves it. if i had a car (hopefully this year) i'd wanna get a gps as well - i don't usually get lost, but it would save having to ask for/look up directions if i've never been somewhere before.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 350 last week before I drove to New Mexico for a snowboard trip. A GPS system can be worth it's weight in gold! I don't know how many of you heard about the 80 car pile up that happened in Amarillo last weekend, but it completely shut down I40 for hours. Unfortunately the wreck happened right in the path of my way home to Dallas.

My Garmin 350 got me around the wreck in minutes taking me through the farm roads of Amarillo (literally dirt roads). I would have been stuck for hours or lost in the country had I not had my GPS.

The Nuvi 350 that I have is awesome! It has some features that I don't really need like an mp3 player, photo viewer, and audio book reading capabilities. The main thing I wanted was text to speech that would tell you the name of the street instead of just telling me to turn in 500 ft, etc. The mp3 feature is cool to have if you don't already have an mp3 player, but the interface for it isn't that great. It's not as easy to navigate through your song collection as it is on an IPOD, etc.

Aside from that everything else about the Nuvi 350 is great.

eeven73, no problem man, glad she likes it.

To others who recommended other units: those all have their merits.

Also, always remember that these are little computers, and no matter which brand you buy they all have bugs. Be sure to register with the manufacturer and sign up for the email updates so you know when new software/maps/firmware is available.
