I just bought a used '00 mastercraft xstar and its about 8 ft wide. the problem we have is our boat slip is 10 ft wide. My question is, how do i get it in that slip smoothly and efficiently without messing up my hull. I have carpetting along the sides, and the tower fits under the roof so im set, its just could someone tell me the steps to get inside. I've found that this xstar is diff. to drive because of the way it reverses and walks. Quite strange. If someone could tell me, it'd be great. thanks!!

Practice, practice and more practice. Remember when you hit reverse it will pull to the right. Until you get it down you might want to get one of those poles w/a hook on it so you won't bang around. W/time you'll have it dialed in. People are always amazed how well I can dock my inboard, it comes just comes w/experience.

At the risk of sounding repetitive practice is the key (and someone standing in the bow with a boathook) Wink

hanging bouys and a hanging rope in the middle from the ceiling so you can quickly correct any miscues. Make sure it doesn't get hung when you launch though! I used to do this with my old I/O. Wouldn't keep my boat in the water for more than a day or so now!

Having some people in the boat helping you is a good idea too. Just incase you screw up and might hit something. I learnt by practise, but I'm sure glad I had people in the boat to help me. Remember that in order to make a change in direction you need to barely be in gear, its kinda scary at first to have to do things faster than you like. And use the reverse right pull to your advantage. If you get the nose where you want it to be, use the forward and reverse to swing the back end where it needs to go.

Good luck!

Practice... You will definitely get better. After a while you will be able add variables such as wind and waves to your boat manuvering skills.
