Was out Sunday and boat goes into protection mode. Temp on motor high. So I pull hose coming from impeller hosing to motor. No water coming from impeller to motor. So we had to be towed in. My question is this. Shouldn't there be water coming out the hose when I start my motor. I pulled impeller and it looks to be fine. No blockage from hull intake to impeller. Is it likely the shaft inside the housing has broken?? or can it come lose from the motor?

For anyone that has trouble pulling the impeller. Try lubing it with Binding Lube before you try to pull it. It worked like a charm.

Indmar engine or johnson water pump? If so the bush which holds the impeller on the shaft can come unstuck allowing the impeller to stay still while the pump spins.

If not then could be a blocked intake. Weeds, plastic bag etc.

I haev impellers that "looked" ok be the culprits...replace the impeller first and see if it fixes it, my guess is it will.

I second this. I have only heard of one case of the waterpump shaft breaking. It is certainly a possibility, but always start with the cheapest solution, you're going to want to install a new impeller in the new pump (if it comes to that.) anyways.
