I got bored today and just decided to photoshop a picture of my truck. It got me thinking about actually doing a paintjob on it.

Would it turn out alright if I were to sand it, prime it, do a few coats with spraypaint, light sand it, then clear coat it?

You could do it for sure... but forget sandpaper as such.. you need super high grit (like 2200 grit) or you wont' be able to get a shine out of it. And you will need alot more cans of paint than you think (about 8-10). I did this on an old Renault Clio a few years ago and learnt alot... mostly that it would have been cheaper to have a local shop do it for cash at a knock down rate.

Actually if you do all the prep work yourself , like the bodywork and removing all the handles and such and sanding the old paint with like 500 grit wet/dry paper you can have a place like Macco or Miracle or whatever is near you paint and it comes out pretty well.

I would avoid rattle cans for a car paint job you will be wasting your time and money.

http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

Might be of interest. With enough work it actually looks pretty good...

I'd ditch the racing stripes though...

Alright I've decided on white and blue. Gonna use some Tremclad and a spray gun. My friend's dad said he painted his truck with that and after a little sanding and a few coats it looks great. No primer needed either.

Getting some nice 27" studded tires for a hundred bucks from another friend so I'm pretty excited. Perfect tread, just worn studs Very Happy The truck's going to look pretty good soon.
