I just bought a new (wood) skate and the paint is cracking already. Is there a way to keep it from getting worse? Can you seal it? Will it eventually waterlog the wood?

Coat of water seal? If you're hitting rails it's probably inevitable anyway and it's gonna get torn up a bit.
