before you complain. I'm not asking what invert i should try first, i know which ones already i just need some questions answered
here is a video of me last week. The speed felt good (about 22mph), the wake wasn't washed, and i edged in for a heelside jump and the moment i left the wake i knew i did something right. So i tried it again and again and i was going bigger than i ever had. (I'm not normally a heelside hero, i just didnt want to take a hard fall toeside and lose my (lack for a better word) luck?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiwlrJuvUn8
So, The boat is a 1998 Sea Ray 210. No Tower, no weight, just 3 people and trimmed up 1/4. Now, my questions are:
1. Does it look like I'm getting the most amount of pop from the wake?
2. Am I getting the progressive edge down?
3. Am I getting enough pop to try and throw a backroll or tantrum? even without a tower?
4. And If i do try a backroll, could someone please explain to me how to initiate the rotation. I easily grasp the concept of the trip flip on the tantrum. But when I visualize a backroll i don't know if i should be doing a board over head backwards cartwheel? or have the board go out the back some? and then i start to think of a mexi roll and ducking my head down. I just confuse myself..
so from reading up on backrolls, I know that i pop, throw my lead hip up and look over my front shoulder and the rope tension does all the work (i just need to keep the rope in close to my body) but is there anything more specific than that? How do you guys start a backroll?
anyway, thanks for watching the video and your help!!

Call me bored but I failed at getting two people up for the first time yesterday and feel like I owe the world of wakeboarding a little something extra. Let me know if this make sense.

| ..Last picture, incomplete sentence, it should say "Its way too easy to back off your edge at the wake, and that is the biggest learning curve...."

Thanks for the help Jim M and ontrider
It's just that when I watch the Riders in my Bent Felix video, they'll flatten off, or atleast some of their board spray goes away before they hit the wake.. So I guess for certain tricks you need to flatten off? But not for w2w?
edit: ok well i just watched this video for the 100th time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8ACfgqU9dg&mode=user&search= Only now i noticed what you said about the spray.. It never goes away like in my video. I guess i'll try to hold my edge and stand taller as i hit the wake..
thanks

Pros have a lot more control and don't necessarily need to have perfect technique the whole way because they can adjust their edge so quickly. You're probably thinking of a 360 or something where it's more of a mellow edge and you don't want so much line tension.

my brother-in-law always says the same thing about my edge. its not really about keeping your spray going, its about how tight the line is when you jump. the trof (dont know how to spell that) makes it so the spray from your board goes away cuz it dips down a little bit.
also it looks like your wake is really narrow you should try to lengthen your rope. and you dont need a tower to do backrolls. i did it with out a tower just to prove that to my cousin cuz he thinks you need a tower to do anything

Actually you want to stand tall as you leave the wake. Increase your edge all the way through the wake.
The good backroll is actually a textbook example of doing this correctly. That would be a good move to work on once you start feeling good release & pop. A backroll sets up with a much shorter cut and a very amped up progressive edge starting at the trough and continuing all the way to the top of the wake.

The way the pros are flattening off and the way you're flattening off are two different things. The pros lay off their edge to give their board more surface area when they hit the wake for the exact opposite purpose skiiers do. They also hold a strong progressive edge until nearing the wake, when they flatten off, so they have built up all the necessary speed and line tension.
So cut in hard and keep building up on that angle. Once you get your w2w's dialed, then start laying off your edge and stand tall.
Before you know it, you'll be in the flats.

The pros in the videos that you're watching might also be doing "trip flips" where you have to back off edge at the last second. I.E...tantrum, whirly, etc...

Here is a suggestion, do with it as you please. I would suggest going 3-5 feet out side of the wash on the side of the wake. IE. when you begin your heal side cut to the boat, you are only 10-15 feet from the wake. Take a good progressive cut in to the wake and see if you can make it w2w. This will help you with edging. It will also help you with the amount of pop.
When you get out wide on the approach it allows you the ability to flatten out and push off the wake. The shorter approach you take the more likely you will hit the wake correctly. Also if you have fins in your board take them out. Fins are a help but more hinder at the time when you are learning. They prevent you from getting good edge control.
