My head is stapled together...sure wish I had been wearing a helmet.

I've heard and seen the general opinion that helmets are mainly useful only if you are doing sliders. Uhm.... I now will have to disagree after what happened to me Thursday. (hasn't stopped me from riding of course, though I'm thinking about getting a helmet now)

I cracked the back of my head while my wakeboard cracked as well. My wakeboard is still usable, but there is a noticable crack where it gashed the back of my head open. I was throwing a backroll like I have been doing regularly, landed boards nose first in the water at an odd angle, and as a result, one foot came out of the binding, and the foot still strapped on instantaneously acted like a lever and just whipped my wakeboard into my head, smacking me hard and ended up making a deep 4.2 cm laceration.

Immediately after this happened, I held my head thinking I had just a little goose-egg bump or something... like the usual type of crashes we boarders are all used to that hurt but are nothing more than our own pride getting a little bruised in the end. Boat driver comes around, as he saw everything and figured that it might be one of those crashes that did some damage. My intention was to get back in the boat, let someone else take a set while I let the headache go away before I went out again for another set. I did go out again later that day, but only after a trip to the ER to get put back together.

Those on the boat were freaked out and shouted "you're bleeding" - I am? Then I look at the water as I float in a sea of red and turning more red as I bled quite profusely. Head wounds sure do bleed ... A LOT! I then felt the back of my head when my finger went in and I could feel the depths of it. I got in boat and they drove fast to dock to make me go to the hospital. Seeking how I soaked an entire huge bath towel with blood, I guess I was in a need of some repair.

On a later set after I was stapled together(without anesthetic, I'm tuff) I took another set, took a crash and sprang a leak, so it was time to hold pressure to the owie again, but it didn't bleed as much and I was fine.

Anyone who thinks helmets are only good on sliders, read the above.

If someone's head was bleeding, I wouldn't let them back in the boat. You don't really want that crap all over your carpets and upholestry... I'd probably drag them in with the rope if they promised not to get blood on it.

ontrider, Puppy Eyes I did not get a drop of blood in the boat. Smile The part I didn't write above was that they trolled the boat to get out of the bloody mess of water to an uncontaminated spot and I was able to get myself rinsed off so I had no blood on my body before climbing onto the swim deck. From there, I kept my head hanging over the water while still on the swim deck. They grabbed a huge oversized bath towel that was on board. I dipped my head in a feeble effort to clean my hair off, etc. With the towel handed to me I applied direct pressure and made sure I was not dripping any blood before climbing into the boat. So, the entire way back while the driver went full throttle a couple miles or so to the dock to rendezvous with someone they called to take me to the hospital. I held that towel firmly to my head and did not get a speck of blood anywhere.

I do agree you wouldn't want blood on the carpets, upholstery, etc. Now if everyone who split their head open was so respectful.

I converted cm to in; the wound is 1.7 inches in length. I'll try and take a picture to share

Upon further thought, I think if you added a tower to that boat ont, it would help pull us higher. And then we can mount our HO boards out of the way!
