I have the unfortunate pleasure of having the worst luck with boats.

My intake sucked something up and blew the engine. There was no warning from the boat because I was idleing. The buzzer only goes off if you are above idle. The sun was shining pretty good so you couldn't see the "check engine" light was on either.

Nautique told me it would be between 11K-13K for a new engine.

Anyone ever done this?

If so, how much did it cost you (or the insurance company)?

Seen it once, Winter Water Land 2 years ago blew the engine on a brand new X-star because they foregot to put oil in it.

I feel bad for the one that bought that demo!

That engine price is crazy. There isn't that much of a difference between a car and boat engine to justify the price. I mean an expensive crate motor is like $3000. I don't see where the other $10g's can be coming from. I would check with PCM or the manufacturer about getting a new motor.

Yeah kinda sucks. Boat is going to be out of commission for the next month or so.

Positive side is I will get a new engine out of it.

The price just seemed unreasonably high so I wanted to see if the price was in-line.

I think the price is extrememely high.

I was told a typical marine crate motor is 5-6 grand.

Are you really that shocked?...this is the B.O.A.T.ing industry.
Standard engine EFI V8: 5,000......marine: 13,000 (same engine with "marine" parts)

They told me the long block is $6,500. then you have to rip my old motor out, take the manifolds off, take the starter, alternator, and all the other crap off. Put all that stuff on the new long block and put the motor in.

All that at 90 an hour plus a few extra parts I ruined. i.e manifold hoses, water pump, etc will run a total of $11,000.

Or, you can buy a reddy-to-go motor will all the parts on it and all you have to do is take the motor off the motor mounts and put this one on it and it will cost you $13,000.

Both seem high. It is basically a marine Mustang motor. There can't be that many differences???

What year PCM do you have? Call Thunderbolt and they might have a rebuilt long block. The guys there know alot about boats. You should be able to get out of this for less than 1500 depending on how your heads and everything look. If it's covered under warranty, i'd go with a new one though.

Heads are blown too so they can't get away with a short block.

The $90 an hour is definately high but there is not anyone else here that knows crap about a nautique. Although their prices are high, I definately trust their work.

Not covered under warranty but is covered under insurance.

It is a SAN (V-drive). Ford PCM GT-40

He expects it to take 15-20 hours to complete.

It should only take about 8-10 hours to do the job. I put a engine in my friends Malibu. It was a short block so I had to change everything over to the new engine as well. It took me like 8-10 hours. If it is a long block that will take even less time. What did the insurance company say. I had a friend who had his block freeze. The repair place told the insurance company that he had a trouble light in it to keep it warm and the light burned out. They gave them the money to fix it. Try to push the insurance company or have the dealer do it for you and maybe you'll get lucky.

I had to replace my motor last summer. I bought a used boat which apparently was not maintained very well. It developed a knock/tick which my boat guy could not explain. Took off the heads and one of the pistons had a chunk out of it which scored up the cylinder bad. Anyway, it was about 6-7 grand to replace. I would get another opinion on the price.

Definately seems high to me. 8K sounds about right from my research. But, the insurance company is taking care of it and they are footing the bill. So, it is really not my call.

If it were coming out of my pocket, I would definately be forced to take it elsewhere to get other opinions.

Before you get the work done, check with a place in Houston called Palmer Power, they charge 75 an hour and their mechanics are awsome. They are hands down the best and cheapest around. Their # is 713-644-6410 and located off long drive off south loop. These guys will teach you more about your Nautique than the dealer!

That price sounds about right for a completely new engine. Have them document the whole rebuild process with a camera for you. Tell them it is for insurance purposes. If you are paying out of your pocket-take of work and offer to assist. This will keep your costs down and teach you some new skills.

I really think you could work that out with insurance!

Good Luck-Sorry to hear about your trouble! Atleast you will be well versed in engine replacement when you get done!

I don't know if this idea will help. What if you were to buy a boat that was a bit older and maybe had lots of hull damage. You may be able to buy a used engine to save money.

I feel for ya man. I trashed the motor in our 02 X-30 at the end of this summer. It snapped the oil pump shaft, and never sounded the buzzer or light. Anyhow by the time I figured out it wasn't getting oil it was too late...Cost about 9,000 total to put a new long block LT-R in it. Luckily our dealer was kind enough to pick up the tab under warranty Mad Mad

when my motor blew, I found GT-40s motors for about $6000. Call Discount Inboard MArine, see what they have. PCM was selling those motors off cheap since the GT 40 is giong away and PCM is doing more GM based motors. I think Discount is the one that gave me the best price.

It sucks to hear that this has happened to others also. But, in weird way, it makes me feel better also. I was beginning to feel like a big dumba@# for blowing up my motor.

Thanks for the suggestions on where else to get work done and other resources for the motor. If it ever gets to where I have to pay for this myself (instead of insurance), I will take these into consideration.

B Montgomery - Does Palmer Power work on drives shafts and engine re-alignments also. I also have a habit of running into underwater stumps and I get charged about 2-3K everytime I do that.

Yes, Palmer does do shaft allignments. The best thing is that usually they will have your boat ready the next day. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, it's just hard to find people who provide excelent service and fair prices. These guys are literally the only people who I've found that are experts on inboards and are willing to share info. Earlier I posted that they charge 75 an hr, I made a mistake, they charge 65.
