The SCOTUS ruled correctly on this and glad to see they did. We should not be creating exclusionary laws in violation of the Constitution.

What I find quite amusing... is I am attending a wedding today (wife's friend/colleague). The bride, and certainly her family (as well as the groom's as I understand it) are hard right Christian. Far enough over where she (age 30!!!) has not bumped uglies... ever.

They get to share their wedding day with a landmark decision about marriage equality. Quite amusing indeed. Very Happy

Read this today and got my thinking if it might happen.

They do, but methinks the author of that bearingarms article best be ready to find himself face down in the asphalt, then jailed, and his firearm confiscated/destroyed. That is likely where his version of "due process" will begin. If he succeeds, more power to him. I am highly skeptical that the courts will side with him in the long run, but hey, every citizen is entitled to use the system.

I believe it is the right decision. I think marriage is an amazing thing; and if two people can share love, treat each other with respect, etc. then they have every right to be married. They certainly uphold the "sanctity of marriage" much more than Ray Rice, Kim Kardashian, or any other celebrity whose been married five times based on when the paparazzi will pay them for wedding photos or to stop their abused significant other from speaking out against them.

Colorful

PS - Apologize in advance for any typos or poor wording. Rough week at work, so happy hour was necessary today.

Well, YES, if okie didn't post and nobody responded this forum would be totally dead. So there is that. For some reason, and I can't explain it besides boredom at work, but Okie just aggravates me with his posts that he simply garners from the latest headline and posts up some baloney. In this instance, particularly annoying to me is this: 'we should not be creating exclusionary laws in violation of the Constitution." I agree, but any law not giving gays equal rights was NOT in violation of anything until like a week ago. That's why we have the S. Ct., to interpret the constitution when the answer is not clear and to change laws over time to fit societal beliefs. This is a hot topic issue, that has been debated for decades and more and NOW we finally have it right at the S. Ct. Awesome. Up until very recently a majority of people didn't want gay marriage, that's how democracy works--I don't agree with that position, but not much I can do about that but to help other people change their minds and vote. If Okie wants to post, and I don't agree with it, then it's also my right to counter.

But regards "pimp your ho" that's both obnoxious and ridiculous. I'm gonna post in this dead website to try and popularize something? ANYthing? anyONE. Ummm, no. Sorry it bothers you lil fella that I have her in my signature. Get over it. And the last 3-4 times my gf was mentioned, it was not by me.

I have posted her in the "hot chick" thread, but frankly that's totally legit, and it's been about a year. I guess I could steal internet pics like a lot do, but that really sounds pretty lame. Over ten years ago I think I posted my exwife in there too...lotsa people used to, Aubs, P-chick, etc.

This seems rather redundant. Of course, the typical Republican voters and many Oklahomans are applauding the move.

Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin has signed into law a bill that allows ministers to refuse to perform same-sex marriages if such marriages conflict with their religious beliefs.

Fallin said Friday that the law will protect the constitutional and religious rights of Oklahomans.

The law says no licensed, ordained or authorized official of a religious organization can be required to solemnize or recognize a marriage that violates that official's conscience or religious belief.

Fallin said the bill makes it clear that religious leaders and houses of worship can't be forced by the government to violate their faith where marriage is concerned.

Troy Stevenson of Freedom Oklahoma, which advocates for gay and transgender rights in Oklahoma, has said he believes the bill is unnecessary but that he supports the spirit of the law.

So Kim Davis is going to jail for contempt. And her subordinates are either going to comply with the law or follow her footsteps.

This on top of the Brady ruling, today has been a really good day for the Courts. Exclamation

jt09, definitely what I expected. I wouldn't follow that jackass to jail.

There are a few more clerk holdouts out there. I almost hope they don't comply, so they get the same treatment.

People who think they will be so-called martyrs for the religious right are not thinking that through. Two words: George Wallace.

She has a job... why wasn't she just fired in the first place for refusing to do her job? Not sure if it's necessary to arrest her.

senorbueno, it's an elected position there. She has to be impeached, or voted out next time.

She needs to resign. She's going to spend a long ass time in jail if she doesn't.

Oh, and people are talking about all this supposed religious right money that she'll be getting later for speaking at events.

I've got news for them: if her brilliant son or (4th) husband is any indication of her intelligence, this lady would probably be lucky to string complete sentences together in a row, much less remember and recite an entire speech. Forget the prompter, pretty sure literacy is a requirement for that.

i don't agree w/ her stance, and i think she should resign if she can't do the job on religious grounds.

that said, she's been incredibly civil about the whole thing. she hasn't been seeking publicity w/ press conferences, or grandstanding about god's law w/ all the cameras in the clerk's office. she's stood her ground, and it sounds like she'll continue to do so - and part of me respects her conviction there as well.

I just don't get it. If you object to gay marriage based upon religious principles, then follow your principles and don't marry someone of the same sex. How does two guys or two girls getting married threaten the sanctity of your "traditional" union? Live your life, and let others live theirs.

I'm not well-versed on the magic book, but doesn't divorce violate the magic book's rules? Oh yeah - religion is a man-made construct, manipulated by man.

The thumpers typically use Jesus' name when discussing homosexuality. Jesus, according to what is in the bible, did not mention it specifically.

He did mention divorce, very specifically:
Matthew 19:9 wrote:
Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery.

IOW: According to Jesus, Kim Davis has and still is committing adultery. "Saved" my ass.

That whole notion is one of my biggest peeves with organized religion. So, you can do horrible things, but if you "repent" and "accept Jesus" you are forgiven? The f&ck you say?

I agree she should resign, or look at options where the deputies can do it.

I also agree that there is a part of me that respects her conviction. I think she's fighting a losing battle, though, and her rights have not been infringed.

That's correct. He spoke mostly to general acts of sexual immorality and various other sins. He did use terminology and reference that ties back to other scriptures from OT times, and that is usually where it gets tied together.

Yep. Cherry picking the scriptures and then using them to judge others is not what Jesus taught.

Scripture does say that, but most of us never truly repent. Most people don't understand what the real meaning of repent is, and she illustrates it perfectly.

Agreed - which is exactly why I qualified it with "specifically". I'd be willing to wager that if you ask almost any one of the nutjobs with hateful signs in front of that county office today - "did Jesus specifically say anything about homosexuality?" - they would incorrectly answer in the affirmative. And if challenged on their incorrect answer, I'd also be willing to wager they would double down on their ignorance.

Agreed.

This behavior is going to present a humongous problem for religion in general as society evolves. While I am sure we will always have plenty of "so stupid it hurts" err... I mean "good red-blooded god-fearing white-republican-jesus loving 'Muricans" around, they are going to continue to be marginalized unless they figure out how to evolve with the rest of us.

They are releasing Davis. She has been ordered to not interfere with her office issuing marriage licenses.

Bravo Judge Bunning. Excellent move releasing her right before the circus (Huckabee and Cruz) coming to town. That will put a lovely damper on their "free Kim" rally.

I wonder how long until she is back in the pokey though? Are we going to have that Wallace moment/photo op after all?
