Churchy - how bad is the gas milage on it? I really like Toyota and currently drive a Tacoma. I want a full size truck, but the 13 mpg turns me off on the Tundra.

I have big wheels which doesn't help, but also cold air intake which does. I have been getting about 12-13 around town (according the truck computer). I haven't had it on the highway yet though. I plan on taking it to Montana next week, so I will know more about the highway milage then. I am guessing it will be in the 16-17 range.

i had to think of this thread twice in the past 24hrs....

yesterday at lunch, i'm walking from my car to the restaurant and see a raptor pass me on it's way to a parking spot. it's bright orange w/ the black x-games looking paint job. as i sit down, i see the driver/passengers walk in and they are textbook socal douchebrah stereotypes - flat bill hats, basketball jersey style tank tops, guages in their ears, chin goats and crappy tats.

today i'm in the drive through for breakfast tacos and see a raptor coming into the adjacent lot. all white - clean look. dude gets out and he's straight austin business casual - nice jeans (read: not ragged out, saggy, skinny, whatever), untucked button down (or polo maybe?) and looks like he has a real job.

pretty much spot on regarding the way i think about who drives each one. Laughing

Here in Cal we just refer to them as 909'ers (hey Okie, aren't you an OG 909'er? lol). Douchebrah is freaking great though!

I would just buy one of the new 1/2 tons. They can do damn near anything and the current generations get decent gas mileage. I'm on my 4th crew cab 1/2 ton over the last 15 years and I haven't ever had an issue pulling anything. Horse trailer, wakeboard boats, 28 foot pontoon, various trailers, etc. all have been fine. I've got no use for a 5th wheel which would be the only reason I would consider moving up or if I pulled large trailers every day.

My 2014 GMC gets 20-22 on the highway, is as quiet as a car, rides great and it's not overly cumbersome in parking situations.

drove the big three chev dodge and the ford f150

really impressed with the new eco 3.5 f150

people with the shorter box 5.5 feet do you wish you had the longer 6.5 box? Coming from the super duty with the 6 foot 9 inch box would i hate the 5.5 box. it really does seem tiny when I compare my box in the super duty.

looking for opinions on from owners with the 5.5 box, do you wish you had the foot longer?

I had the gamut of diesel pickups (dodge, gmc, gmc, ford, gmc, in that order) then went to a Ford F-150 with 5.5' bed. I haven't ever regretted not having a longer bed, but I do have the fold away bed extender which I use often. In fact, I have 2 dirt bikes in the back of my F-150 right now with the bed extender in use. I'll take a pick tomorrow morning if I remember. If you haul long items often, you might want a longer bed, but dirt bikes is typically the longest things I haul.

I have a '12 F-150 SCREW w the 5.5 box and I initially had the same concerns. I also opted for the bed extender, but I have only used it 4-5 times. Normally when I am hauling stuff it either all fits in the bed or it requires my trailer and a 6.5 box would not have made a difference anyway. I am at 65,000 with nothing but praise for the EcoBoost and the truck (knock on wood). One thing that has been great is the retractable step in the tailgate, I highly recommend that option.

I have the 5.5 box and generally don't miss the extra foot that I lost versus my previous truck with the 6.5. Most of the time when I do wish I had a longer bed, only the 8' would solve the issue. Most of the time my truck is used as a car, and I appreciate the ability to properly fit in parking spaces.

your truck would never pass the BP safety test

is there any way of locking the box extender? If I have a back flip cover, that will go to the end of the box. When the tailgate is flipped out it basically locks pretty tight. If you the extender on is there away of making sure nobody can get inside the back of the truck?

I guess it's a good thing I don't take BP safety tests then.. Confused

I can stow the bed extender as pictured below, shut the tailgate and lock it, but there's still a 5' x 5.5' opening in the top of the bed that allows easy enough access.

pick up the truck today.

I'm going to add a couple of things. I'm going to swap out the factory rims for some XD series rims (black) similar to what we have on the boat trailer. Also going to add some fend flares.

Not sure if I'm going to stick with the blue flares or go with black? What do you think?

Wouldn't be getting it lifted at this point. Maybe down the road but I really want to see how the truck does before I start throwing a bunch of money at it.

To each their own.

If you can't be talked out of fender flares, I'd say go with body color flares.

Based on those pics, you probably should just find a Raptor.

Think i'll just do a leveling kit. Maybe put some air bags on the back for when I tow? Don't need the lift really and I want the truck to tow decently. I do want to personalize a bit hence me getting some different rims. I don't love the factory painted rims that it comes with.

Talked to the dealer this morning and they don't have any bed extenders in inventory. they said installed they're about 575 bucks. I'm going to check them out when I pick up the truck. Installed? Ohsix are they easy to take out if I don't want them in the bed of the truck all the time?

Bambamski, the bed extenders just un-clip.

I wouldn't lift anything I was going to be towing regularly with. Bags are the best answer if you sag when towing, so you don't end up rough as hell when not towing (if you used stiffer springs, etc).

Leveling kits are great for looks, but are mpg killers, if you are in to that.

Those trucks pictured look like something my kid got in a pack of Hot Wheels. More power to ya if you are in to that. Razz

haha not into that Chavez those were the only two decent pics I could find that showed the blue or black.... If I bought the Chevy I would have had to put a lift on it just to make it look decent. I like the looks of the Fords and Dodges with the stock height.

The leveling kit sucks for towing? hmmm I was looking at a truck forum the other day and it said the leveling kit helped the towing... I'll have to do some more research I guess as I don't want to eff up the towing. I figured leveling which is basically brining up the front end a bit and throwing some air bags under the back springs would work the best. I'll have to look into it some more.

thanks

I've done the front level kit on two trucks, but never done the airbags. The sagging I experienced wasn't too bad, so I never worried about it. I definitely like the way a truck looks with the leveling kit, versus the factory rake.

They're one Torx head bolt on each side IIRC. They stow away the sides pretty nicely. I've never had a reason to take them out. Lots of them on ebay for $300 shipped. They take less than 5 minutes to install if you know what you're doing. Probably 15 minutes if you don't.

Bambamski, no not the leveling kit. That is mostly just going to sap some mileage out of the truck. It wouldn't have a whole lot of effect on the towing capabilities, especially if you get bags or something to level out the ass end when you are towing.

I think I can get the rims that I want so there isn't any offset so there may not be any need for the flares. I wasn't sure if I could get them like the factory spec. I didn't want mud dirt crap flicked up all over the truck from the tires

Chavez. So the levelling hurts the mileage but not the towing. That makes more sense. I'll see if it effects it by much. I do work for the struggling oil and gas industry. We need to start burning more gas!

One month into owning the truck.

I haven't driven it a ton and I've only towed the boat for a short distance home from where we store it. First impressions. It drives like a car compared to my old truck. Around town and on the highway it's awesome. It's freaken fast, you can be doing 90mph in seconds and it doesn't feel like you're going that fast. Towing the boat, not so good compared to the F250. It's something I'll probably get used to but there is a big difference in how it handles the load.

I'm going to put the air bags in the back for sure, it just feels spongy and soft with the stock back end set up. I'm hoping the bags make a bit of a difference. I'm not going to worry about getting the air compressor at this point and just go with the manual blow up for now and see if I like them.

I haven't driven a 1/2 ton for at least 14 years and forgot how much better they drive vs the superduty. So far I'm glad I went with the short box, I was able to fit three kiteboard bags in the back with all the gear. THat's all I really need.

I'm shopping for a new truck. I don't do much towing anymore, but I need a truck bed and something with more interior room than my beloved 2013 Tacoma (I love that truck). Flame on, but I plan to get the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. It's underpowered compared to the other options, but I only move bikes and kids now. Full-size interior with nearly 30mpg is about as good as it can get, even looking at SUV variants. I test drove one and was mostly impressed...I could do without the rotary-shift knob. I can't believe the other OEMs don't have a direct competitor. Am I missing something before I pull the trigger?
