I'll be in Austin from Thurs night through Monday night. My friends wedding is on Saturday, and I decided to extended my stay because I dont know when I'll have money to return.
What's the deal with franklin barbeque? I'm reading that people wait in line for 4 hours for food there? Is the food that much better, or is it partially hype? I'm under the impression that there's no shortage of good food in the area, so I can probably avoid the places with long lines. Is that right?
We might try to rent bikes and explore a bit. Looks like there's plenty to see (UT campus, river, etc). Lots of places seem to rent bikes. Are there any spots in particular worth checking out?
Were staying 3 bocks from 6th street, so we will be checking that area out, too.
You can find a number of good BBQ places in Austin. I do like franklins but it is a little cold to want to wait outside for it right now. I have heard good stuff about JMueller but I have not been. Blacks from Lockhart just opened a place on Barton Springs across from the Palmer center. Might want to check that out.
Town lake and Zilker park is the area where you can bike down by the river. Capital, campus is probably close to where you are staying.
Flemings, Bobs Chop, Perrys, Vince young...number of steak places downtown.
South Congress has a number of places for food also. homeslice pizza.
Black's is the best, but its a haul out to Lockhart. Havent been to their new location. Id rather drive to Lockhart than stand in line at Franklins. _________________ TONA
black's is not the best. franklin is the best, and it's not up for discussion. black's isn't even the best in lockhart on any given day (although it is on most ). all the lockhart places have become fairly inconsistent over the last 5 years or so.
that said, i wouldn't dedicate 4+ hours while on vacation to the line at franklin. just go to john mueller or la bbq. john's my boy and he does make the best beef ribs, so that's my rec. la bbq is owned by john's evil lesbian sister, but john lewis is a hell of a pitmaster. you can't go wrong w/ either.
john mueller meat co la bbq

understand that there are 2 very distinctly different parts of 6th st - dirty 6th, and west 6th. dirty 6th is 6th street from ih35 to congress, and you should probably avoid it as a place to hang out. it's college kids, punks, homeless, tourists who don't know better. west 6th is 6th from guadalupe to west or so. it's the 25-40 crowd...little more douchey, but you're less likely to be slip on puke or get hassled for spare change. west 6th: http://goo.gl/QgJ36q

same family, not same restaurant or affiliated w/ the lockhart place. reviews have been pretty decent so far.
there is a black's family bbq on guadalupe that is part of the lockhart group, but they don't cook anything there - it's all delivered from lockhart daily. no idea how good that is.
understand that wherever you go, it's going to be a bit spendy. beef prices have gone through the roof lately, so brisket is running ~$18/lb at most places.
Thanks a bunch for the input. Sounds like john mueller meat co is somewhere I'll have to visit. What's the typical wait time there on a Friday?

I'm sure jt09 will respond. Take his suggestions on pretty much anything Austin related.
Absolutely...and if anyone in my crew questions his suggestions I'll pull open JT09's my monday didnt suck thread on my phone and ask them to reconsider
I remember hearing in the past that there were 'two different areas of 6th street' so thanks for getting into greater detail. We're staying on Congress near the capitol so we'll just head west when we hit 6th. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

not a wait at all. there are so many good cue places here in town right now, it's actually hurting business for all of them. the only place w/ a wait is franklin, and even that is getting shorter. just make sure you get there by noon, or even 11:30, or you run the risk of someone buying all the beef ribs before you get there. also - make sure you get the cheesy squash. it may not sound good, but it's fuggin amazing.
I'll be there next month for a week long work trip, not sure if I will have much downtime, but hopefully will be able to hit up my wb.com Austin peeps for a beer!
Scott_a...hope you had a great time in Austin. It was a great weekend. the weekend before we had freezing temps and rain. the weekend you drop by....perfect.... somebody must be living right.. _________________ Wakeskating Ronix Wakeboards Wakeboarding
111 W 10th...maybe 100 feet from Congress. Airbnb spot. We were on the second story so we had a great view.
The trip was outstanding in about every way. The weather was absolutely perfect (this is my favorite temperature for walking around) and we walked 90% of the time.
Stuff I liked
John Meuller for dinosaur-sized beef ribs
Torchy's
Little Woodrow's (which is frequented by Seahawks bandwagoners)
Brew Exchange
Shoal Creek Saloon
512 IPA
Some dive bar that charged $20 for 4 IPAs, two well drinks and a shot of Jager. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com
